We've heard about Sony making sensors for other companies. Now it looks like the tables are turned. According to snapsort, the Sony RX100 III uses a Nikon sensor.

Jerry,

According to SONY's press release, it's the same Exmor R CMOS that's in the VII and RX10. There are a couple of Nikon sensors they have fabbed themselves, but most Nikon sensors are made by SONY. I believe the V-series sensors are made by Aptina, not sure about the V3.

I'm also not sure where they're getting their info to say it's a Nikon-made sensor unless it's the Aptina.

You're apt to be right about the Aptina.

I think snapsort goofed. The RX100 III has an Exmor R BSI-CMOS sensor, which I believe is a 1" SONY sensor, not Nikon. I've been bass ackward before, but I think it's snapsort that got it wrong. Just my 2 cents!

I find it hard to believe that something posted on the World Wide Web would be inaccurate. :D

I think they're using "Nikon CX" to describe the size of the sensor, not the manufacturer. The Sony RX-series and Nikon 1 system both use the 1" sensor size, but that's a nomenclature from video tube days which we generally use for P&S cameras (1/1.7", 1/2.3", etc). This is just marketing-speak for interchangeable lens camera sensor sizes: FF, APS-H, APS-C, m4/3, CX.

Snapsorts biggest inaccuracy is with shutter lag. Any time there is a DSLR with a number around 200-300ms, that includes autofocus time.

Yep, I believe you nailed it.

I agree with you. This snapsort site is very unreliable. I have often found them to provide false info and would not be surprized if that was the case here. Or why would Nikon be selling a 20 mpx CX sensor to Sony and not use it in their own cameras? Nikon is at the moment using up to 18 mpx CX sensors for their own production. I am sure some at this snapsort site has mixed up the sensor producer with the sensor format as that is often referred to as Nikon CX format. Nikon was for a long time the only user of this format when others went for the Micro 4/3 f.x. But now Sony and Samsung are already using this good Nikon CX sensor format and others will probably do that sooner than later also.

But this is far from the first nonsense I see on this snapsort website, actually I sent them a correction on some other info about 8 hours ago about a camera comparison that I accidentally ran into on the internet. This is not a website that people should rely on when deciding what camera to buy, at least without verifying the info before buying.

I have noticed this too, and it seems like they are not testing anything, just providing info they get from other sources without analyzing it properly. That sometimes turns out like comparing apples and oranges.

Right. Unlike Dpreview, all they do is compare specifications, assuming they have the correct specs. Of course, where digital cameras are concerned, specifications are important, especially if snapsort gets them right.

I do find it a convenient place to compare specs of different cameras. Their final score, though, should generally be ignored, because it is unlikely that their weighting of the different factors will match any particular photographer's preferences.
