This is a good idea. At the bottom of their check, Olive Garden shows what the tip would be for 15%, 18%, and 20%.

No more trying to find that app, fumbling for the calculator, or scribbling math on a napkin.

Great idea, some people are real cheapos. I was a waitress when I was in my teens and know how hard you work for tips. I always overtip...

I take the easy way out. I double the total and round up so it's an ever dollar amount.

I went to a restaurant the other day that did this and told the manager he was cheating his employees. The tips listed were calculated on the amount of the check before the tax was added. I don't know about anyone else, but I've never heard of anyone tipping on the pre-tax amount. In my case the server was shorted less than a dollar, but over the course of a shift or a pay period that can add up to some serious change. The manager agreed with me and promised to alert corporate to the problem. We'll see next time if it gets fixed.

I've seen that done as a comic effect in movies, and I've also seen it given as advice in financial columns. That takes being cheap one step farther.

Olive Garden figures the tip on the food, without the tax.

I wonder what restaurants do when they include a tip in the bill for large groups.

Restaurants in LA are using iPads to swipe your credit card then present a tip screen for you to select. Funny, the 40% tip is at the top, 15% way at the bottom.

It would be simpler to just double the amount of the bill. :D

I tip according to the service. I do tend to tip a lot more in cheaper resturants. The servers work just as hard as those in the high end placeses. One in awhile I would like to leave two cents buyt she who must be obyed will not let me. - Dave

I was a carhop in my younger yrs. so I tend to over tip, but I do tip over service received taking into account that slow service may be the kitchens fault, I have on two occasions left no tip and told the server why. IM 74 yrs old so twice in that time isn't bad. By the way figuring a tip is very easy , you move the decimal point one digit to the left for 10% and double it or triple it, as you wish.

If I understand you, your saying if your bill is $50.00 you give a $50.00 tip ? I will give a 20% tip and round up. but you are giving 100% tip kudos to you.

now, if olive garen paid a liveable wage, the wait staff wouldn't be so dependent on tips.

re. tips - sadly even when you are really great, some people are just cheap!

I once calculated what he percentage of a tip added to a group of 8. It came out to 18%. Not bad. However, I will usually go w/ a 20% tip. My minimum is always $1.00, even if it's for a $5 or $6 breakfast

Many restaurants pool the tips. The busboys & girls also get a percentage at the end of the evening.
