Problems with shooting RAW in Canon SX-50

When I try to open any RAW files (.CR2) in PSE10, it says it is the wrong type of file.
If I open them in Smart Photo Editor, they open up, but the color is washed out. See examples.
They load fine onto ZoomBrowser and display as shot.
It seems they all open up fine in PSPx5.

Anybody have any idea what is going on?

And, does anyone know if the SX50 shoots in RAW in Auto as well as any other settings?

First, does pse 10 support the sx50? Pse 10 came out in 2011, the sx50 in 2012.

I didn't think about that. I just figured that RAW is RAW and if the software reads RAW that was it.

Each camera manufacturer updates it's software and sometimes the editing program doesn't have the newer reader for the software.

On a further note, the latest version of camera raw supported by pse 10 is version 6.7. The version of camera raw needed for the sx 50 is version camera raw 8. That means you have to download and use the adobe dng converter or download your raw files with the Canon software supplied and then convert the files to a version that pse 10 will recognize.

I'd rather just update my software than convert the files. I've been trying to find out if Elements 12 supports the SX-50, but can't seem to find the info. Where did you look to find out the info. you just gave me?

Thanks for the info. I couldn't find it anywhere. I think I'll just upgrade. Thanks again for your help!

Just to add some detail:

Per http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2012/11/camera-raw-7-3-release-candidate-now-available.html the SX50 uses Camera Raw 7.3 - AND -

Per http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html PSE12 ships with Camera Raw 8.1, although you can update it as far as CR 8.3.

I am making a guess that the problem is White balance.

With the SX50 you CANNOT save RAW in the AUTO setting (they think if you use Auto that you don't know enough to be able to work with raw files I guess   )

Also some of the SCENE and special modes won't let you save RAW.

You could also use the Canon DPP program that comes on the CD with the SX50 to edit the RAW/CR2 files. That is Canon's raw file editor.

I use PSE 12 for editing SX50 raw.

Picasa will also read the cr2 files, but not many options there for editing them.

As mentioned, you need to be in certain shooting modes, such M, Av or Tv, in order to shoot raw with the Canon SX50, and you cannot use the digital zoom.

I set up the custom buttons for using the in-camera teleconverter, and have SCN mode set to burst. You then can set Av or Tv for raw or raw+jpg, and be able to switch among your choices quickly without going into the menu.

If I open them in Smart Photo Editor, they open up, but the color is washed out. See examples. The program simply isn't up to date for your particular camera model

They load fine onto ZoomBrowser and display as shot. They will in ZB because ZB is made for that camera model

It seems they all open up fine in PSPx5. It appears that PSP is up to date with your camera model

And, does anyone know if the SX50 shoots in RAW in Auto as well as any other settings? No, none of Canons cameras give you the choice to shoot in raw while in full auto. Full auto is for those people that want to keep it simple

Thanks, JeepDaddy. As to the last question about shooting RAW in auto, my T3 definitely allows me to shoot RAW when I'm in the auto mode. I guess because it's a bridge camera, you have to sacrifice some things.
