Due to some personal issues and the weather I was unable to get my new lens out in the field yesterday. May not be able to for a couple of days. So, decided to pay at my bird feeders.

So far I have noticed that this lens seams to focus fast. I am very pleased with that! Also, it is not as heavy as I expected. It weighs 4.3 pounds. That is 3.7 pounds lighter than my Sigma 500mm and .9 pounds heavier than my Canon 100-400mm lenses. Not bad at all! Another thing I like is the front optic lens does not rotate. That is a big advantage to anyone that uses filters.

Also, I can focus on a BIF, at say 200 to 300mm, and grab the front of the lens by the hood and it will slide right out to 600mm very easily. That is nice, something I have always liked on my 100-400mm lens. One big difference though, you do need to turn the ring to back off from 600mm, it doesn't slide very easily in that direction.

Here are a couple of quick shots taken this morning. Taken using my 7D, first at 1/500, second at 1/800, both at f9.0

ISO-3200 That is why there is so much noise. I did not run any noise reduction on either photo.

Great job. I love shooting the birds at my feeder for 2 reasons.
1- Birds are always available
2- The birds are so accustomed to me shooting them, they don't fly off.
I am looking into getting that lens, my husband wants to know what I want for our anniversary next week, and this lens is on my wish list. I'm so happy that I have some samples to show him.

Nice shots. I just picked mine up this week too in the Canon mount. The weather has not been the best and things have been hectic at work but will hopefully get out this weekend with mine. My first observation is that this lens is massive. My Canon 100-400 L series is dwarfed by the Tamron. It definitely focuses slower than the Canon, but still acceptable. Also, it is heavy. I will post some shots later on as well.

Thank you, I appreciate the compliment! So far I am liking what I see. I think it is going to be a hard lens to beat for the money. It is one of the least expensive lenses I have in my collection and so far it looks like it is going to hold its own against them!

I won't know till I can get it out in the field but it looks like Tamron may have hit a home run. It may have been well worth the wait.

Chris,

It is less than a pound heavier than the Canon 100-400mm, not bad for a lens 200mm longer. Yes, it is fairly large but part of that is the tube diameter to help it gather light. In my opinion it gathers light much better than the Sigma 150-500mm lens. I no longer own that lens but remember it as being a light hog!

I also own a 6D and will be testing it on that body as well. That should take care of the noise. I rarely shoot my 7D at an ISO this high though.

Here is the first photo with some noise reduction done.

I'm looking forward to getting it out this weekend. I've seen a ton of posts with this lens from the lucky ones who where able to secure one earlier. They have all been really nice. I'm sure it will be fine and those comments were just my quick 2 cents worth while taking it out of the box. Thanks much.

When you first unpack it and place the hood on it does look intimidating!

More really nice shots with the new Tamron. Did you actually receive it recently? Or did you buy it at 1st of the year? Looking for some hopeful signs of delivery because I'm along with other on waiting lists.

Enjoy it.
