The best photo editing laptop

I travel around my state photographing different events. Many times 4 hours one way, then I have to travel 4 hours back home to my desktop computer to edit and convert my shots. I am looking for a laptop that can handle my program downloads, speed and a fairly large monitor with adequate IQ. Not concerned about price.

Look into alienware the gaming pc has incredible graphics that work with photo's and cheaper than a mac pro.

The MacBook Pro will do the job for you without any hitches. I recommend a wireless Wacom tablet to go with it. I have an Asus 17" laptop and a 15" MacBook Pro and I find that I use the MacBook Pro 99% of the time. It simply works better, IMHO.

Look for a laptop that has an SSD (Solid State Device) as its hard disk - they are blazing fast compared to a SATA Disk, and boot up much quicker. Couple that with at least 16GB of RAM and you should be good to go. I've now converted 2 Lenovo T520s with the Samsung 500GB drive. I use a USB 3.0, 1.5 TB external drive for all my data files (RAW photos and Processed libraries)

Solid advice. Perhaps a more critical decision would be choice of editing programs which might be dictated by the PC or MAC decision

I recently converted from PC to Apple and wished I had done it years ago. MacBook Pro 15.4" with Retina display and 500Gb SSD with LaCie 6Tb Raid for backup. Lightroom, Photoshop, Bridge, Intensify Pro and Portrait Professional covers all my needs and very reliable and fast! Well worth the investment.

There are alternatives for photographers and videographers.
For us there are two "sub-groups" that apply to our needs. Places like B&H will let you look for "Gameing Notebooks" and "Mobile Workstations".
3 years ago I bought a ASUS "gamer" for my travel needs. I've never played a game on it, but it "sings" with Photoshop Elements, Premier Elements and Lightroom. A current example can be seen here: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1033714-REG/asus_republic_of_gamers_g750js_ds71.html

Whether Apple or PC, the key components are big bright screen, gobs of memory, fast HDD, faster SSD, recent version of multi core Intel i7 processor and multiple fast ports for external HDDs. SD card readers help. For video work a NVIDA graphics card can help for video with some software, but for photography applications the built in graphics in the latest i7s work well.

Mac Book Pro all the way! Can't beat it! I have the 17" screen and my pictures are very true to color.
