Trying to figure it all out

I am trying to get past the love/hate relationship with a Sigma 150-500 on a Nikon D7100. I have been using hand held, try-pod, mono pod, balancing, etc. Typically the birds are in the yard, on the feeders and I am the crazy lady in the neighborhood hanging out the window or sitting quietly on the deck with a glass of wine. Yes - that lady.
Any help would be appreciated. I think focus is diminished slightly by old hands. But the lighting doesn't seem to look like images posted on UHH.

You need to increase your ISO and shoot at a more wide open aperture, so you can increase your shutter speed (ideally at least 1/800, preferably faster). That will help with motion blur, if your hands are at all unsteady.

The first one is underexposed, because the background is lighter than your subject. You need to compensate by increasing your exposure for the subject you want to highlight whenever the background is lighter than your subject. The focus is off slightly, too, because the woodpecker is soft.

The 2nd one, focus is way off (looks like it's on the grass behind the cardinal).

The 3rd one is very close to properly exposed, and the focus looks to be on its chest, so the face/beak/eyes are soft, but not by much.

What software are you using? Can you check to see where the focus point was in your images? That might help you further trouble-shoot what's happening.

Allen - thank you for your advice. I will use this advice today and see what happens. The focus point on the woodpecker is on the the right part of the eye, more than 1/2 the eye is in the focus point. The yellow bird is jaw and chest you are correct. Cardinal is way off.
Again thank you for sharing your ideas.
