Nikon D5100 third party battery compatibility

I just updated the firmware on my D5100 that I bought just a couple of weeks ago. It came with only 1 battery, which takes a full hour to recharge, so I was looking at buying 1 or 2 more for outdoor shoots and have read on several blogs that the new "update" does not allow the 5100 to use third party batteries, they just won't function in the camera... but there are advertisements for "hacked" batteries that supposedly can "fool" the firmware into thinking is a genuine Nikon battery. Does anyone have information or first hand experience with this issue?

do not even go there - use the nikon batteries. third party batteries cannot be trusted. there is a reason why they are less expensive.

I use Wasabi batteries as backup. I don't have a D5100, but a D7100. The Wasabi "decoded" batteries work perfectly, and I can't tell any difference in performance. I have to remove the battery to see if I'm using a Nikon or Wasabi.

Use nikon. I've read of horror stories with 3rd party batteries. I have a d5100 and a d7100 and for what I've invested in the camera's I'm not willing to risk damaging them to save a few dollars. Nikon batteries on amazon are reasonably priced.

well, the third party won't hurt the nikon or nikon would be having a major class action suit for deliberately damaging their product for the sake of profit... so a$17 dollar experiment might be what I'll end up doing... if it works, awesome, if not, I'll get by until I can afford a real one... which won't be too soon.

Not risking $1,000's to save a few $'s. Just not worth the risk. Just read an article on Apple chargers vs 3rd party and the 3rd party cuts so many corners it just is not worth the risk on expensive electronic equipment for me. Not cameras, iPads computers etc.

only reasonable if you have money. I've ended up selling most of my woodworking equipment, except my hand tools, to fund my new camera venture... don't have anything else to sell. I do have a Nikon MB-D200 vertical handle posted in the for sale section if anyone is interested... then I could buy a Nikon battery... :D

My Nikon Df takes the same EN-EL14 battery as your D5100. I found I was not getting enough shots from a charge with the factory battery and needed a backup, so I tried the Vivitar branded replacement, not only does it cost less than half the Nikon, it works perfectly, and the 2x higher Mah rating gets me over 1300 shots on a charge compared to around 600-700 shots on the Nikon. No issues with it at all. I have relegated the Nikon to a backup battery for my fiancés D3200 and now carry two of the Vivitars exclusively for my Df.

I would venture to guess I likely have a lot more invested. If something works better, its always a better buy. There are lots of junk aftermarket batteries out there and I would never recommend anything I had not tried and thoroughly tested myself in the field. Results speak for themselves.

I understand your position, I also really can't afford to lose my camera... that being said, have you ever heard personally or in any D5100 or Nikon post of anyone burning their camera up using third party batteries? So far I haven't... and since neither of us have tried it to verify if it works or not neither of us can really say... but as I stated earlier, it is supposedly an update with the 5100 software that supposedly doesn't allow the 5100 to recognize third party batteries... and as I also said... if they updated the software to where third party batteries would fry the camera instead of just not working... I'll be able to fund a full blown commercial studio with my settlement... they cannot change software with the intention of damaging anyone's camera who wish to try third party batteries or third party anything UNLESS they send out a letter, posting, or some form of public announcement that they have done that, which would kill their market in less than 1 second. That would be direct, willful, and premeditated sabotage.

Every States Attorney General would be filing lawsuits within weeks, if not days of an announcement like that or a provable action when everyone who owned a 5100 burned up their camera in the same time period.
