I finally got my new camera...and see a post talking about 'noise'...just wondering what this means? I will guess, maybe it's clutter in a photo? The post said 'putting Canon on notice', and I'm worried now as mine is a Canon EOS T5. Compared to my old Minolta it's sure fancy. We'll see...Anyway, someone let me know what camera noise is? Thanks! :?:

Im not the best to explain but noise is a fine grainy look to the photo. It can come from using a high ISO setting. I use nikon so not sure what to tell you about the Canon. You could also google it and see what you find or wait long enough and you'll get several commenting. Welcome to the world of dslr. Your going to love it.

When you crank up the ISO to get a picture in dim lighting, you tend to get "confetti" that shows up especially in the dark areas. Instead of a smooth black, you'll see tiny colored spots.

Basically, it's better to have a picture with noise than have no picture at all. Software makes it easy to eliminate some noise.

Noise is a grain that usually shows up when you have used too high of an ISO in your exposure. It will often show up when you exceed 1,200 ISO. Do a search above of "noise" or on YouTube and you will get a better understanding. Enjoy your camera and don't worry too much. Good luck.

Once you learn a little more about noise, I'd go to a dimly lit location like a museum and take a series of pictures at progressively higher ISO settings to see how your particular camera handles low light situations. As stated elsewhere here, there are many good programs, I use Lightroom, that can remove much of the noise from a picture.

A great idea Mr. PC! I got this camera to use to photograph my art so that will be good practice? I will also check out Lightroom. These new cams are just tiny computers...and I'm a real dummy with it all. Thanks so much!

Hi B! Thank you! I'll have to play with my camera and learn it. I almost went with Nikon...I had to just guess which to go with. I researched for months and couldn't tell one from the other. Shows what I know. I hope to go on a short drive soon to use it and see what it can do. :) Good to hear from you! S.

Yes, we do have beautiful scenery here, but we tend to take it for granted.

I generally shoot at 100 - 400 ISO, and noise isn't a consideration.

Hi Susan ! Here's a couple of things you can do to build your DSLR knowledge and skills sets quickly .......

Take a good look at, and learn from, these short, highly instructional and free videos about all sorts of subjects relating to using your DSLR .......

http://www.photographycourses.biz/all_photography_videos.html

And, if you do encounter "noise" along your photo journey, here's an additional free software programme you can use to help eliminate, or at least reduce, it from your pics .....

I would not give a specific ISO number unless also specifying the sensor.

Sometimes noise is overstated. I recently went to a ceremony for my granddaughter who was being inducted into the National Honor Society. We were allowed to take photos but could not use a flash. The lighting was very poor so I had to use a very high ISO. If I crop the photos I can go up to an 8X10 and the printed photo looks great however if I do a 100% crop the grain is obvious. My point is that the 8X10 looks great and I’ll never print anything larger so the noise really doesn’t matter in this case.
