Did a bit more practicing this morning. I was pretty limited on time and I was going to be in full sun, so I left the flash in the house. Get to my spot and a bee/fly lands right in front of me. Lean in for focus and start shooting away. I was using my extension tubes for the second time (36+20+12) and it turns out I had the focus ring turned to the MAXIMUM focus distance rather than the minimum. :( Oh well, lesson learned.
You can definitely capture this same scene with just your Nikkor 105-mm macro lens at MFD.
Yes, extension tubes are useful, but I strongly suggest that you get a good handle on using your macro lens by itself. To best learn macro, turn-off Auto-Focus (to start), turn your lens to MFD, and move camera/lens combo towards/away from subject (6-inch Working Distance) until focus is seen through viewfinder.
With full set of tubes on your 105-mm macro lens, you can capture 2:1 magnification (2x life-size) at MFD, which means this fly would fill the sensor.
