Hi all,
I'm curious to know what glass Canon owners typically use to shoot landscape photography. I realize that this is a subjective question but I'm curious to see if there is a common favorite.
I'm thinking about buying a prime lens but really can't afford to dump the outrageous $2k+ on Canon L glass at this point in my life. I see mixed reviews on the non L Canon primes but most of negatives are concerning softness at the largest apertures which is not a concern for me since I'll be mainly shooting f8 or smaller. I have also seen some reviews that mention some these lenses are tack sharp in the f5 area then soften as you close it down. This could be a problem for me.
Can anyone comment on their experience with any of the non L primes for Canon from 24-50mm shooting at f8 or smaller?
Thank you
Depending on the subject and my mood or time available my 10-22, or 24-105 L
The 17-40 L is what I use most of the time
It depends on how far away from your subject you are.
Iv'e used a 17-40 f/4, a 24-105 f/4 IS, a 70-200 f/2.8 IS and even a 300 f/2.8 IS if I'm standing way back (about 5 miles).
Depends. I prefer my 35mmL, my next choices, in order would be my 17-40L, 24-70L and finally, my 24-105L. It all comes down to where I am versus where the landscape is. Sometimes I even use my 70-300L. In short, whatever lens I have with me that will get the job done. With a 6D.

Would you generally use your T3i or 6D? I think that would affect your lens choices.
Maccardi,
I think you need more than one lens, It depends,,,,,,,,,,,,
Prime is hard to use on many case since you are not always able to the get on the "sweet spot".
I use mostly 24-70L mm .
With backup 16-35L mm and sometimes 70-200LII.
On full frame camera, advance on landscape images.

You already own one of the best landscapes lens made, your 24-105. For you it becomes a 40-160 that gives youi even more reach. That lens was a "starter" for many landscape photographers, it is very versatile. Someone gave me an outstanding piece of advice concerning this lens, "don't let it make you forget about your feet". The 24-105 encompasses all the main primes, and works well for portraits. It really is one "L" of a lens ...

I have 28mm 1.8 prime I'll be using in Utah this June. I'll get back to you on how it did. Mike

I only shoot with the 6d, gave the t3i to my daughter. The lens I use most is the 24-105L f4 that came with my 6d which has a nice focal length for most of what I shoot. I also have a cheap 70-300 f4-5.6 that came in a bundle with my t3i. As I mentioned previously, I can't justify dropping big $ on L glass since this is hobby and not a profession.
The general point of my post was to find out if a non L prime would deliver sharper images than my 24-105 zoom at the same focal length/exposure. I am hoping to get feedback from people that have actually used both of these products that could offer their own opinion

That would be great, thank you
Ideally, you will want the 24mm TSE for full frame. I gave up trying to do digital landscapes with a Canon crop frame. Consider using a film camera with Velvia if you have a low volume. Also consider using a Sony camera with in camera HDR and sweep panoramas. I have been wanting to try the Samyang 24mm F1.4 manual focus lens for $600....reviews are very good.
Depends on what my goal is in the finished image. I use 16-35mm, 24-70mm, 70-200mm, 100mm and 300mm

I don't think you're helping his cause.
Zeiss 21mm. Also, my 17-40 and 24-105.
