Greetings everyone, I'm new to this forum. I have just taken my camera off automatic and am using AP. What i want to do is get familiar with taking pictures of the Northern lights. Does anyone have any experience or pointers for me. My wife and i are going in September just for this.

Hello and welcome to the UHH forum. I've not been far enough north to photograph them but you might want to google photograping the northern lights.
In the interm you can certainly practice in your own back yard shooting the night sky.
Vary your shutter speeds and f-stops.and practice . start with a meter readingand if you can't get one bring up your ISO speed until your camera shows metering, now you have a starting point. Play with all your variables until you obtain a good stsrting point and with some fine tuning will get your feet wet. I'm sure that you already have a tripod, and shuter release cable, and oh yeah a good wide angle prime lens to top everything off.
OBTW write everything down in a small log book. This way you have reference in the palm of your hand for future use. Best of luck!

I am going next week. Wish i knew more then i do. I will let you know what i learn. It is suggested a 5-15 second exposure, tripod a must, several batteries, controlling condensation when entering a warm room by placing camera into a zip lock bag ( not sure how that helps), place camera in camera bag while cold this helps to allow it to slowly warm up like a cooler, and so much more.............

Welcome to the forum. I have no advice for photographing the northern lights as I haven't had a chance to try it out yet.
