Just Fred Loc: Darwin's Waiting Room

He has stood at his easel for years, braving the elements. Never mind that he occupies a gazebo at the entrance to a shopping center, alongside a busy highway, a beacon for all to see.

If it weren't for the odd "growths" on his cheeks -- that look like pasted-on candy wrappers -- he could be expected to drop his brush, pack up his case and easel, and be on his way at any moment.

Thank you, twiga. Yes, those do look like Peanut Butter Cup wrappers, don't they?

Unfortunately, the statue is situated within a closed circle of bushes; I fear the authorities might have gotten upset had I broached the boundary for a closer look.

I found this on the Internet:

"An unusual statue stands next to a small shopping area in Northern Virginia. The Right Light is the name of the statue. It was placed by J. Seward Johnson. This is a figurative statue since it is not of any individual person, but rather that of an artist, any artist."

I really don't know. There's one on each cheek, so it's not an accident (or vandalism).

During some holidays, the statue is "decorated" with seasonal articles, so I wonder if they aren't "fasteners" of some sort.

The placement of the statue makes it difficult for anyone to get very close to it (I had to park and walk through tall grass to approach it), so they aren't noticeable for the most part when cars drive by.
