I have been trying to download brushes for my Photoshop Elements and am having trouble with it. Some of them are sent in rar files, and I can't find a good, safe freeware that will download to open up these files. Or is this software something I need to buy? Also, does anybody have any sites they use and like to download brushes?

I think that 7-zip should open those. FREE
Or an inexpensive option is WinZip. Well worth having either one, I currently use WinZip. But have used 7-zip in the past and was satisfied.

ExtractNow is a freebie. Just watch the installation and make sure you install what you want. They're supported by other companies allowing the program to be free.

I have first-hand experience with the first three in the list. I highly recommend them.

Winrar, 7-Zip, Winzip, PeaZip, BigFileZipper, OpenKnife, etc etc etc - there are dozens of openers for compressed files out there, and most are free.

Try www.deviantart.com
once open, type brushes into their search box.

Winrar was the original software for creating and extracting .rar files. I haven't used it in many years, but looks like you can get it free here:

I've been using 7zip for the last 4 years or so and have not really found anything it cannot handle. In a lot of cases, I've found I can run files directly from the 7zip manager without having to extract the file first so I save hard drive space.

WINRAR.... The first one on Gene51 list.

Download it from the Winrar site to avoid spyware, malware from download sites. HUGE PITA these days. Always download from publishers web site. In this case that would be:

http://www.win-rar.com/download.html?&L=0

RAR files are encrypted to make file size smaller, like the older ZIP files.

RAR is NOT a post processing software, it is merely for reducing file size or combining multiple files together in one file for transport over the internet, or by jump drive, etc.
