Novice question about wi-fi

I am confused with the procedure of transferring a photo from a wi-fi camera to a android phone. Correct me if I am mistaken, but I would need a wi-fi connection to do it? I know, it sounds like a dumb question. I am capable of using my phone as hot spot.. So that is the way it is done? Any other options?

The Nikon WiFi app for you android phone allows you to set up an adhoc (stand alone) connection between the android phone and the WU-1a adapter that you plug into your camera. No hot spot or WiFi router needed. I have a Nikon D3200 and it works great. The app lets your remotely control the shutter, remotely view through the camera lens and send the picture to your phone after you snap the shutter. The app is available from the Android store. I think this app works for most of the Nikon WiFi cameras. I don't know about other brands.

This is exactly correct. Some cameras have the ability to transfer images wirelessly to a computer...such as my Sony RX100II but not my Oly EM-10 which needs a USB cable or direct SD card insertion into a computer or card reader. This is also true with Panasonic. I am not sure about Nikon or Canon's wireless transfer capabilities.
