I Have Noticed Myself making....

I have notice myself making less images. What I mean is the when I go to a place to shoot, I am discerning about what and how I make the image. Using today as an example, in my past trips to this place I would make over 100 images, today I only made 41. However, more of these 41 images are usuable than when I was making over 100 each trip.

Below is a link to the 4 albums I post to each day. You can go look and I think you see improvement from my images of 2012 to 2014.

This is not a question. I am only sharing a self-observation.
Thank you for reading.

Your skills are clearly improving - I wish some of the spray-n-pray shooters out there would take a lesson from you. Especially those annoying wedding fauxtographers.

I agree with you, the more I learn and the more I practice, the better the quality of images and the lower the total number of shots I take.

I think many but not all photographers go through stages of photography. At first new photographers just want images and since they may not know what are good images they simply take many. As time goes by they refine their skills and they learn what type of photography they are most interested in. It could be wedding photography, landscapes, macro, aerial flight, birds and wildlife or maybe portraits. They then learn how to make the best photographs in that area.

It also depends on what we as photographers are looking for in our pictures. Sometimes I see pictures on UHH that I think are terrible pictures, maybe out of focus, too dark or too light etc. But then I know others who are much more accomplished than me probably look at my pictures with the same eye. We are all at different stages of development and we all have different tastes in photography. That is what makes photography so wonderful to most of us. We get to pick and choose what we want to photograph. We also get to choose how the final product will be.

I also take less pictures now but think my personal photography skills are improving. Luckily I still have a ways to go.

Good luck to all of us in our shooting,

Dennis

This may be a stupid question but from your explaination of going back to the same place to get MORE photos, are you actually going back to the exact same location? If so, no wonder you're shooting less, you've covered that area very well if you used to normally take over 100 shots each time your went there.

If I'm understanding what you wrote, go to different locations. You can only shoot one scene so many times and boredom will surely set in.

Thanks for sharing your discernment of skill improvement.

I too notice a similar behavior, which I describe as taking more worthy photographs. In my case, this improvement had to do with two factors: One, learning how to achieve a good exposure, and two, refining my composition and framing skills.

I delete more photographs in the field, too, because of better recognition of duds.

Altogether, I bring home more photographs with potential for worthiness.

I've spent several years striving toward this end, and now have neared it.
