I'll be visiting the Arizona in Honolulu and I know we can't bring a camera bag or backpack so I was wondering if a vest with lots of pockets will be allowed. If I may only bring one lens I guess it'll have to be the 18-200.

I'd appreciate hearing about your experiences there.
Thanks.

You could bring a fanny pack large enough to hold another lens.

Fanny packs are not allowed either.

Why are these things not allowed?

I have a light rain jacket with large pockets that I can stick a lens in and have in similar situations without a problem. Security is ramped up all over, sad as that may be.

Not sure you will need more than the 18-200 but it's been quite awhile since I was there.

Being the shy recluse I am, I figured the best way to find out about photo equipment on tours was to ask from 2500 miles away, so I sent an email to the USS Arizona Memorial asking a bunch of questions. I'll post any responses.

I took my Canon camera 60D and a Sigma 18-250 and that wasi. My wife to a small coin walnet. Nothing else. I have been there twice. 2007 and
2010. I have a sleeveless vest. I am not sure it would fly.

Good luck! I sent them an e-mail quite some time ago asking just one or two questions and never got a reply.

For more replies on the situation here is a similar topic I posted a while back:

You won't have near the time you think. I took a good point and shoot (a canon S90) and it was fine. If you get too wrapped up in taking pictures, you'll miss the impact of the place.

Your 18-200 will be fine. You are up close so will be shooting at the wide end more likely. Take time to experience the emotion of the place, that is what it is about. When I was there you could stay as long as you liked, don't know if that has changed, hope not.

It's a memorial not a side show! :!:

The entire area, including the visitor center, is an active naval base. The Navy tightened security after 9/11. Basically, nothing that could conceal a weapon or explosive is allowed. Cameras are allowed but most everything else is not.

Now that makes sense.

Take a point & shoot or one lens and observe and enjoy. Don't get so bogged down that all you remember about the experience is wrestling with equipment you didn't need.
