Going to Amsterdam, etc on Netherlands tour next week. Would appreciate tips, from Hogs that have been there, on "don't miss" locations to shoot

I found the canals and barges to have many wonderful photo ops. Most of the remainder is similar to the rest of Europe - lots of photogenic sites. In Amsterdam, many are within walking distance of the canal area and multiple circles of connected canals. A day or two walking this area will be well spent.
There are sidewalk cafes that are enjoyable as well, and its easy to strike up conversations with locals and other tourists from many countries.

How much time do you have? How will you be travelling? Car? train? bike?
By car: An old historical town to spend an afternoon is Brielle.
Close to the Deltaworks which are a must-see:
The storm dam (Google Earth 51°57'18.5"N 4°09"55.84"E),
"Old" against "New" - the Central (railway) Stations in Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
The "Afsluitdijk" - the dike that turned the Zuiderzee into the IJsselmeer and connects the provinces of North Holland and Friesland. In a few places in several provinces (Friesland, Overijssel, North Holland, Zeeland) regional dress is still worn, especially on market days.
There's the cheese market in Alkmaar, Keukenhof (millions and millions of flowers) near Lisse not far from Amsterdam, Madurodam ("the smallest city in the world" ) in The Hague.
Oh, there is just too much....
Since you mention Amsterdam, is it safe to assume that's where you will be staying? Check with the tourist office outside the Central Station:
http://www.amsterdam.info/tips/touristoffice/
They will have up-to-date information about opening times, special events, transportation, etc.
Enjoy, have fun, and come back relaxed and with lots of photos!

How timely!
We are going there in a month.
It's been 24 years since we were last there.

Is Keukenhof on your itinerary? That's a beautiful spot and the flower shows are gorgeous. Also, a short train ride from Amsterdam is Haarlem. It's lovely there, with lots of photo ops. Have a great time!

I live near Amsterdam. Friends of mine live on KNSM-eiland. As you might have guessed eiland means island. In the eavening when the sun sets you have a beautifull view over the water when you are standing on the bridge to the island.

Excuse me for the spelling errors but my iPad is being very creative.

Everyone will offer places to photograph. I will recommend the local beer, rijsttafel, little pancakes at the Dam.......

Yes and speaking of beer. Heineken may be the best seller but it is in my opinion the inferior one when it comes to taste.

Although I was brought up on Amstel, Grolsch and Karmeliet (Belgian beer) are my personal favorites.

...this is the names attributed to three large windmills that reside relatively close to each other. Unfortunately, I do not recall the exact location. I will do some checking.....

Keukenhof should be up at the top of your list but one really needs a full day to do it justice. It is wonderful in the Spring.

There are great photographic opportunities everywhere in Amsterdam. Just stroll around, you can't go wrong.

Amersfoort (about 40 minutes on the train from Amsterdam) is an old walled town. Lots to shoot there. Ask for directions to the bull statue, a quite remarkable statue in the middle of a roundabout about 300 metres from the town centre. Great thing to photograph whilst using ones imagination for angles.
