Postwar children of Paris - April 1947

My 1938 Automatic Rolleiflex got a workout in April 1947 when I took a week-long furlough from occupied Germany to visit Paris. Ah, April in Paris! Among the many images I plan to share are these of a few Parisian children, all of whom were born either before the 1944 Liberation of Paris three years earlier, or during the chaos shortly afterward. Many foreigners equate Paris and France as the whole French experience, something disputed by folks in Normandy and the French Riviera. But Paris definitely is on everybody else's list. I hope fellow Hoggers will enjoy some of these captures. Again, I apologize for the quality; these are all scanned from 65-plus year-old contact prints, 2-1/4" square.

Richard, you really don't need to be apologising for the quality, the content is enthralling, these images should be archived somewhere.

Most importantly these prints are in very good condition, the majority of images taken by amateurs at that time are in poor condition. By amateur I don't mean that these picture suffer by being taken by an amateur, quite the contrary, it boosts their credibility.

Very eloquently phrased. Nice to see English English expressed.

( It's not really that far behind Gaelic )

Since you know the Gaelic, you will know about the Lewisman who was asked the Gaelic eqivalent of the Spanish 'manaña', he replied that there is "no Gaelic word which conveys such haste".

Graham, thank you so much for your enthusiasm! I'm so glad you're interested in these prints. I only wish I was 20 years younger so I could reassemble my 4x5 enlarger and fillup my processing trays for a week of printing. But that ain't gonna happen. Instead I have to get some medical work done so I can install a negative scanner next to my computer. Then I might be able to display better images of these old shots.

Hi Tom, thank you for your comments. I gather you and your family were immigrants either during or after WW II, so please accept my welcome to the USA. Don't worry about the attacks on our freedom here -- they were under attack from the day the Declaration of Independence was signed. Various freedoms were suspended at different times by various Presidents and were later restored. Abraham Lincoln suspended the Writ of Habeus Corpus during the Civil War, for example. Franklin D. Roosevelt interned loyal Japanese-American citizens during WW II merely because hysterical people on the West Coast suspected them of being loyal to Japan, even though many of their sons enlisted in the US Army and fought valiantly in bitter battles in Italy. You haven't lived the American Dream "off our backs". You accepted the challenge of opportunity in a lively civilization and apparently succeeded in a world-class economy. I hope you continue to prosper in good health!
