I don not have a clue what this one is, I have hunted on a couple bug id sites but failed to id, but this was an impressive beastie, at first flicking its tail before settling for a minute, it had wings that retracted right inside of the middle section and could make a great buzzing sound with them.
Anyway trying out some new settings, which I'm thinking I'll stick with a while now that I found how I can get the Yongnuo to work at 1/180th rather than the 1/160, all just experimenting.
All without extension tubes, but thinking I will start with them again next time back from work, keeper rate is at a good level again.
Settings for all 4: ISO 100, 1/180-sec at f/14, Yongnuo YN560II speedlight power 1/4 +0.7EV
After further hunting I think it is the Devils Coach-Horse Beetle or the posh name Staphylinus olens
Kind of an ugly dude. :( Nice capture of the eyes in the last shot. :)
Scary looking thing, I like #3, good work.
Could very well be Devil's Coach Horse, although I thought they were usually black rather than brown... maybe a nymph or something. Same family though if it's flicking its tail. I've been looking for these, never found them anywhere in Surrey bah.

When looking through to identify like you most images were black, but also seemed on the small side, the first image is a little short of full on 1:1, I would've estimated at around 20mm so it was definitely at the larger end of the scale and kinda figured may have a wee change of colour, either way I was chuffed to get it to sit quiet for a few seconds :D , but good luck with your hunting down your way.
Diggin' the first shot in the series Infestation....
