Riding the bus home from work I would spot this construction site as the bus crested a hill. I liked the way the light struck the support beams, creating a criss-cross affect. I couldn't shoot from the bus, so I drove back to the place and tried to find the same basic perspective.
But somehow the photo, no matter what I do to it (cropping, post-processing, etc.) is disappointing. Maybe the elevation and angle from the bus is what make the scene striking. Nevertheless, is this salvageable?
(Edited to add: I tried using Lightroom 5.4 Spot Remover to erase the construction crane poking out from the top of the building, but I have yet to learn how to constrain it properly to not leave artifacts on the image).

Fred,
I like the shot -
Good composition and lighting - and I personally like it the way it is...
I use Elements as I do not have LR loaded and do not know what capabilities LR has.
The spot remover tool will grab the surrounding area to "smart fill" and when working next to a wall, it is grabbing some of that so you end up with the artifacts.
However, the clone stamp lets you select the area to clone and apply it where you want.
To remove the crane artifacts - I would zoom in to around 1000% ~ 1600% and use the cloning stamp - set it to the blue sky and go over the artifacts - the super zoom gives a very jagged edge (sawtooth) but you can get super clean results this way... One thing I learned with Elements is that using the brackets [ ] increase ] or decrease [ the size of the tool (brush, stamp, etc..) so you can make it pretty small and get right next to the sawtooth - almost pixel level if you want to zoom in that close and do that much detail...
Hope this helps on cleaning up a pic -
Fred, I'm just a little curious on this shot in that I was wondering, were the bus windows tinted, that might help account for the difference what you saw from the bus. If that was the case you might have need a natural density filter or Polar filter.
I personally have found Light Room to be a pain when it comes to removing objects that are next to each other. They tend to bleed over. Sometimes, using another program like GIMP to remove them along those objects then going back into LR might be advantageous to you.
I can certainly see why this scene attracted you. I think it would work better if there was more color in the building, it looks washed out. If the top edge of the building were darker it would help balance the construction and the shadows. May I post an edit so you can see one possible way it would look?

The time differential between your bus visit and your visit with your camera may explain your disappointment; the lighting could just be different enough to change your photo from you initial impression. Just sayin...

Thanks! I don't know what you were aiming for, but I tried some different modes in Topaz Adjust and found that I liked the ones that emphasized some color in the building to balance the lattice look. If this misses the mark, give me some guidelines and I'll try again.

Makes a nice black and white abstract.
I gave it a shot.
Our brains really fill in a lot of details that intrigues us that may not translate to the final image.
Wow, some interesting interpretations! It's amazing what happens when people with different "eyes" take on the same subject. Thanks!
Keep 'em coming. It helps give me ideas, too.
