Cruise from Baltimore to Nova Scotia

Hi everyone. I'm taking a cruise (which was supposed to be a photo workshop but got cancelled) from Balitmore to NovaScotia. We stop in Portland Main and I want to go to Acadia and Cadillac Mountain. There is an excursion but it is set up as a private tour priced for groups of 7+. Does anyone know if you can get to these locations on your own without taking the excursion? Or if there are other photo ops I should consider? The travel agent so far has not been much help on this.

It has been years since we have been uo that way, so some of my info may be dated, but both Acadia Park and Cadillac Mountain are National Parks and are open to drive in traffic so you can rent a car and drive to Acadia but I don't recall the distance or driving time to either or between them. I think Cadillac Mountain is on an island in the Acadia river so that may require a ferry too.

Both locations are part of the National Park service and have websites so google them for more info. Early mornings tend to be foggy--especially in August, but usually clear by mid-morning.

I think it is a stretch to try to do both in one day and have enough time to see them and get photographs. After you review the websites you may decide it's may be more reasonable to pick one or the other.

Also contact the Maine Tourist Bureau; they probably have info on both places.

I visited Maine and landed in Portland. I rented a car and drove the coast to Arcadia which is a great drive. Many small towns like Camden, Rockland, etc, and bunches of lighthouses to shoot. Take a look at Maine lighthouses on Google if you have an interest in this. Arcadia is a great visit and you could spend some time there. Don't know how much time you have but there are many opportunities for great images from Portland to Arcadia. Have a great trip.

Lots of photo opportunities at Ft Williams.
The Portland Headlight is the oldest lighthouse in Maine - and I would guess one of the most photographed -

Acadia National Park is a 3-hour drive from Portland, though would be very picturesque as mentioned. Cadillac Mountain is in Acadia National Park and no ferry is required :)

The rocky coast of Maine, especially in and near Acadia, is spectacular with its pink granite and forests. Quite different from Portland and southern Maine.

Your Cruise ship stops in Portland,Me and you want to go to Acadia National Park? Just wandering if you realize how far a drive it is from Portland, to Acadia or Cadillac,Mtn.? I have taken that trip twice by car and it's quite a drive.

Hi Jcmarino,
If at all possible do try to get to Acadia. These are a few things you might find! It is absolutely beautiful and definitely worth the drive.

Some years ago - long before I got into photography - my wife and I drove to Acadia for a two week vacation. Stayed in an individual cabin at a Bed & Breakfast. It was interesting, enjoyable but a week too long. Excellent scenery.

From Baltimore, as I recall, the drive was about 10 hours.

Did the coastline there many years ago. First thought: don't forget Thunder Hole! Don't remember if it is in that area. Coastline in Maine is beautiful! You will love it!
