The Stanford University Cantor Arts Center is currently hosting an exhibit of over 70 images by legendary mid-1800s photographer Carleton Watkins. His photographs of the Yosemite Valley are credited with being very influential in the establishment of Yosemite National Park. The exhibit will continue until August 17 and admission is free.
I am unable to copy and paste a link because of a this malfunctioning computer. More info can be obtained by googling "Canor Arts Centor." I did run a search on this and did not find anything. If this has already been posted, my apologies.

OPB... as in Oregon Public Broadcasting...some time ago had a video added to their library for online access. I saw the video when it was broadcast originally over the air.
The video is called "The river they saw", regarding the Columbia River Gorge as it was photographed in the time of Carleton Watkins. He was shown on the banks of the Columbia River, with the tent setup that he used to prepare his glass plates on site for the time.
Also covered were other photographers, including two socially elite members of Portland Oregon Society and the Camera Club. Sarah Ladd and another I cannot recall. One of the two ladies had a river boat built and outfitted with a dark room. They ran the course of the Columbia for some time photographing the Gorge and native americans along the river.
The San Francisco Earthquake and Fire in 1906 destroyed Carleton Watkins studio and much of his work. He lived another decade after that.
Interesting show..."The River They Saw"

A Google search of "Carleton Watkins Yosemite" begins with a list of many of his fine photographs.
