Hi Everyone. I have been using ViewNX to view my RAW images from my Nikon camera and have had no problems until today. The program kept crashing, so I uninstalled it and decided to download the latest version. I received an error message saying that the program was no longer supported by Windows XP! I called Nikon and they confirmed that it would no longer work with XP.

My question-Is there any free program that will allow you view NEF files from Nikon cameras. I tried GIMP, but it does't work.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I use Fast Stone Image Viewer for the majority of my raw file (NEF) viewing & raw editing to JPG format:

To use RAW on Gimp you also needs to install UFRaw. It can be used as a plugin to gimp.

Infranview will open darn near anything.
Search Google and down load.
Its what I use to get the NEF's from my 610 into TIFF so I can still use CS5

Irfanview will work. If you download it, get the plugins, too.

I use Faststone as well. In addition to light editing, it lets you save to TIF and other formats as well.

Thank you so much. Sorry I didn't back to you sooner, but I had major computer problems yesterday, ended up spending $400 to have an online computer work remotely on my computers. Don't know if I did the right thing, but that's what I did.

The program, seems to work fine. I was so used to using ViewNX, and now I guess have to take the time to learn this program. I really appreciate your help. Take care. Mike

Thank you for your help. I ended up using Faststone.org, which was free, and seems to work fine. There was a charge for Pictureviewer, and so I opted for the other program. I ended spending $400, to have a online service debug and get my computers working properly, and so I wasn't in the mood to spend more money. It bothers me that I spent so much money to have my computer worked on remotely from India. I hope I didn't make a huge mistake.

Thanks again for help. Take care. Mike

Thanks, Jerry. I ended up using faststone.org, which seems to work fine. It's kind of annoying that Nikon stopped supporting Windows XP.

Thanks again. Mike

Mike,

I hate to tell you this, but that is one of the biggest scams going today. Everything they did to your computer you could have found on some of the better PC-forums such as dpreview/PC-Talk or http://hardforum.com for FREE.
A couple of years ago I called Microsoft for help with one of our computers, they transferred me to an outfit in India. Said they could fix it for $300 and maintain it for $50/month thereafter. After laughing myself silly, I wound up doing a clean reinstall of Windows myself.

Besides, for a couple of hundred more dollars you could have bought a decent, brand new computer. Next time you have computer problems, either Google the problem or go to an appropriate chatroom.

I had a feeling I was doing the wrong thing, but I needed help fast. I was having trouble using one of my computers because there were a million popups. I could hardly use the computer. Another issue was I had bought a tablet and forgot the password. I called Samsung and they couldn't help and told me to call Netgear, but they wanted money to do it, and so i opted out.

This company told me not to use the computer running XP because it was infected and couldn't be fixed. I'm going on a trip and intended to use the XP computer to store my photos as I have done in the past. That's how I found out that ViewNX was working and that Nikon was supporting it any longer. If it was for that I wouldn't have used this company. At first I thought I was talking to Microsoft, but mush later in the process I found out it was a third party company.

Money is money, what's done can't be undone, but my real concern is 1-do they have access to my passwords, etc. Also, I run a program called Malewarebytes. I did a scan afterwards and found 1309 problems. I removed them. But I decided to do several scans and even though I removed the threats, it always comes up with 1309 threats. As you can tell I'm not a computer person, although I'm forced to use the computer to process my photos-one thing I didn't have to worry about in the "film" days.

I appreciate your help, and as I mentioned if it was a one time thing, fine. They got me for some money, but as i mentioned, my real concern is what do I do now. Take care.

Mike,

I can appreciate the desperate measures you took, I've been there. I don't believe they have access to your passwords unless you give them remote access to your computer again.
I can't tell you what to do but I would email them and tell them if you don't get a full refund, you'll file a complaint with the BBB or with your credit card company. Sometimes you get their attention real quick and your claim is that their fee was INSANE and Microsoft re-directed you to the bogus company (shame on them). But you said "lesson learned" so we can move forward.

As far as your virus situation, download both Avast and AVG FREE versions and run both on your PC (not simultaneously). I have had to do this myself before, what one program fails to eliminate, the other 2 will pick up. Worse comes to worse, it may be best to do a clean reinstall of your operating system in which you'll need the CD. This is not complicated, but you do need to backup any important files to disk.

And I think it's about time you moved up to Windows7 or 8, my preference is 7. If you can find a W7 installation disk (check Amazon), all you do is put it in the drive and it does all the work for you. You will have to reinstall all of your software but the new codecs should allow you to view your RAW files.

Good luck,
Charles

Thanks, again, Charles. I actually called them, after I responded to you and they ran the Malwarebytes and removed the threats. I still don't know what i was doing wrong. i removed them and restarted my computer, but they were still there.

I'm currently running AVG, I get-hopefully nothing. take care. Mike
