The "best" SLR......? Could you narrow that down a bit?
SLR's start around $500 and go to about $10 K

I can suggest a good place to buy a refurbed Nikon body and lenses; get on eBay and look for Cameta Camera on Long Island; it's a very reliable dealer and they get TONS of refurbs from Nikon. I'd need a lot more info to be able to suggest a particular model.

Hey Gitzo ... thanks. I can spend around 500.oo ? Or a bit more for a bundle. I've searched Amazon so far. I need to take clear pix of artwork so just wondered which might be the best. I know it's technique too. I'm a beginner. ps. Love your avatar pix. Couldn't get my fox photo to load. :)

Here's a few more tips at getting the most "bang for your buck"; NEVER buy camera "bundles"! Don't buy any camera that "just came out"; the minute Nikon or Canon introduce a new camera model, an existing model immediately becomes "slightly out-dated" (and cheaper ) For example.....the Nikon D 90 "replaced" the D 80; it offered some improvements over the D 80, which made all D 80's cheaper; a few years later, Nikon came out with the D 7000; it offers quite a few advantages over the D 90, so today, you can buy a brand new D-90 for probably less than half of it's original price; a really nice used one can be had for even less; I regularly buy a lot of stuff on Amazon; for the very "experienced", Amazon can be a great place to buy certain things, but you have to realize.......probably only about 40% of the stuff advertised on Amazon, is actually "from" Amazon; The "Big A" has become the world's biggest Mall.....with thousands of "dealers" of all sizes......many "great", and I'm sure a few are "not so great"! And they all have different return policies, which can be crucial IF you need to return something; someone mentioned Adorama; it's probably second in size and sales volume to B&H Photo; of the two, I go with B&H every time; (Adorama isn't "great" when you need to return an item, but B&H IS; )

Just remember one thing about ALL amateur photographers; whether they will admit it or not.......they ALL love to have the "latest & greatest" camera! Meanwhile, someone who really understands photography will come along and make FABULOUS pictures with "slightly out-dated" equipment !

Hi Susan. When you do find something that you like. Go to a real camera store and see if you can find one to pick up and feel. And always buy the best glass you can. How big is the art you are taking? A nice little zoom lens would be great for that type of shooting.

B&H is a great place to start and also Adorama.com
They both also sale used equipment and are first rate stores.
I've purchased all of my current cameras through Adorama.
