Been a lurker here for several weeks, now taking the plunge....just got the Nikon D5100 kit from Costco for Christmas....what a setup! Look forward to learning from all y'all!

Welcome, and enjoy. If you explore every nook and cranny on this site, you'll find tons of information. I keep a small notebook handy to write down tips, websites etc. It helps.

Yes, I have a daily notepad at work and have been writing things down like moonshot settings, etc....great idea.

Unreal. I also got a D5100 kit for Christmas, and my brother lives in Livermore CA. I already had a D70, and it has taken me a couple of years to learn it. I expect that with the manuals and books out there I'll have the 5100 figured out by 2015. I guess just getting out there and taking pix is how a person can learn. It's worked for me forever. Alot easier now because I'm not spending $80 a month to develop crappy pix. Go out and have fun!! Also, get a back-up battery.

Yeah, backup battery seems prudent....btw my first 2 posts with the new gear are on here shown as "SoCal Scenery"...we were over on the west side of Palos Verdes if you know where that is....beautiful spot!
