Hanalei Pier

Having spent the better part of 3 hours trying various perspectives and waiting in vain for the god of good light to answer my plea, I concluded that it just wasn't going to happen. So I packed up my gear, collected my wife from the pier and headed back to the car. At some point I glanced back and saw this shot. No time to set up again, so just grabbed what I could get in 2 quick shots. When I reviewed the day's collection I thought this might have some merit. I'd appreciate your thoughts and critique.

I like this alot.

The leading line of the pier from the left edge takes my eye to the clouds in the top center, which then take my eye across the image to the right edge. And I like that the clouds toward the center leave "space" for the ridges beyond the pier, so there's nice separation of elements.

Color and tone are really nice, too.

I'd say the god of good light DID answer your plea - just took him/her longer than you planned on. ;)

This is a pretty sunset image.

My own sensibilities might tempted me to bring up the beach in the foreground in post processing so that it doesn't quite go to almost black.

I like the overall composition and the lighting (especially of the clouds) is kind of magical. Also, the people walking on the bridge and the people in shadow in the structure give the image some additional interest.

My issue with the image is that everyone has seen about zillion beautiful sunset images. This is a good one and I would have tried for it if I had been there. Still, with a zillion competitors, it is hard to make an image stand out.

It occurs to me that final presentation size might matter with this image. A big print of this might have quite a lot more impact on me than does seeing the image in a relatively small size on my computer monitor.

Not too shabby for a grab shot - chance favors the prepared mind. The colors are rich and appropriately dark with no discernible noise.

You might want to look into http://photoephemeris.com/ to help you save some waiting next time.

The EXIF does not contain any information so I would have to guess you used a reasonably high ISO and shutter speed to avoid any blur from camera shake or movement of the people. Can you tell us about the camera, lens, etc. and how you metered the exposure?

Yep. Here's another sunset shot, And when they are replete with merit as is this one, I love 'em all. Although there are innumerable sunset photos, each is of a specific ...perhaps miraculous ...moment never before witnessed and never again...perhaps until some time after the next Big Bang, after this universe has been replaced with another...never to be seen again. So you just go ahead and try to bore me with the good ones. Won't happen!

Allen Hirsch has well, and with admirable concision summarized the equally admirable cooperation of fortuitous compositional elements...obviously, as with any well-composed grab shot, more to the credit of the largesse of the Cosmos than of the photographer's careful plotting.

I can only conclude that our photographer was, with his able, discerning eye, to immediately appreciate the stunning complementary cooperation of the deep blue late sky with purple and magenta touches in reflections thereof in the water, and the rich, bright orange of the set Sun skimming the Earth to illuminate from a low angle the clouds that so fortuitously graced the scene.

Impact: 4
Technical: 3.5
Composition: 4
Total: 11.5 ( not bad, for a quick grab shot, eh?)

Thank you all for your kind comments and observations.
jgordon: I, too, wondered about the foreground balance, but now I'll try that to see how it might improve.
Dave: ..."more to the credit of the largesse of the Cosmos than of the photographer's careful plotting." Couldn't agree more!
Selmslie: Canon 5DII w/ 24-105 lens at 24mm; ISO 200; f/6.3 at 1/80". Given the circumstances I wasn't really conscious of the settings, and as to metering, I'm assuming that I did what I'd normally do in this setting - meter the dusky blue sky away from the sun. Actually, I do use that site a lot in planning a trip. Unfortunately, it isn't able to tell me what the weather conditions will be on the day that I'll be there. Sure wish they'd add that feature!
