I am a beginner photographer, but am excited to have my first gig, shooting pictures of runners in a remote location ultra race. What recommendations do you have for the best websites to post the pictures for participants to view and purchase?

Do you want to sell the pictures at a profit? That will reduce your choices.
http://www.smugmug.com/about/It cost me $40. a year to display my work and sell it if I want.
1. Domain name at godaddy.com
2. smugmug account
3. list your domain on every Free search you can find on the net.
4. Put you domain on free ad on google.
5. Business cards from vistprint.com give them to every one you shot at the event and who ever you meet. Tell them you sell your prints on line.
When you have your domain in print put it like this
www.domain.com the
www. help to find you in the search.
It took me 3 years to get this on the first page.
www.snapshots2010.com try it.
other domains going to it.
www.bbnpb.comwww.noveltyPHOTObooth.comwww.imagesbybillybob.comwww.snapanprint.comThis is the way I do it for my events and photography work. Good luck.
Yes, I would like to profit from the sale of the photos. I have looked at the Shutterfly commercial site. Is this a good option?
Thank you very much for the thoughtful reply. I will explore the options you have listed. Much appreciated.

I don't know about Shutterfly's commercial site. I use the SmugMug pro site, but it is $150/year. Zenfolio has a similar option for about $120/year. Both work very well.
Thanks, I will check out these 2 sites.
Your biggest issue is going to be how to drive the runners to look at the site - whatever site you end up with.
I assume you have worked (or will) with the race organizers to have the URL listed in the race materials. You might consider some signage at the finish area location as well.
Congratulations on getting this opportunity. Don't quit your day job! :-)
Thanks for the suggestions, CaptainC. My day job is what allows me to enjoy my photography hobby, so no consideration of leaving that behind.
I do my prints at events, I have printer to print 13 x 19 and 8.5 x 11 to do them on site. I use Epson printers. Use Redriver.com photo gloss paper, is the best.
There's a lot of info on youtube.com for event photography that might help.
I do my designs like below.
Print on site
The back of my photo paper

If you have the time, the best site is your own. You can purchase a domain, and throw up a wordpress site in a day. That will allow you the most profit. My
www.capture48.com site is a wordpress site with photocrati plugin.
However I still have a Zenfolio site as I can't find a great plugin that will allow customers to show crop, and forward to a print company. So most shoots where I am selling to a specific customer right now go through Zenfolio. If I shoot for myself, I sell through my WP site. I would hope as WP plugins get better I'll find one that I can sell to everyone from.
But as someone has already said, having a site and getting people to hit it, are two very different things.
I use Zenfolio.. clubflyers.com does great business cards
