This was taken about two weeks ago.

I'd like some suggestions for next time. It was shot with a D7100, Tamron 24-70 @70, f/2.8, 1/40, ISO 800, no flash, manual focus. I hope the EXIF makes it through.

For some reason, AF was going nuts. It was quite crowded and using a tripod was dubious. Obvious faults; softish focus & harsh glare. I don't have an 82mm polarizer, but would that even have helped on a metal object?

I believe this has the potential to be a finer photograph by cropping it as a head shot. I tried to copy and do this as an example, but I couldn't open that file.

I love the lighting of the picture but I would have come back more toward the 24 end of the lens. It just seems there is a lot missing in the picture. Just my opinion.

Ansel and Dennis, many thanks for looking.

My apologies and a smaller version has been uploaded. As I look at the photo, I'm not so sure it can really be saved, as the shot is too high up his torso to eliminate the other visitors. But, yes, have at it.

Something missing? Maybe the whole lower half of the body? ;) Seriously, though, my intent was to have the words, "I HAVE SWORN", to flow through his head. A different time of day and there would have been fewer people. Composition wise, I might have had better luck at sunrise and with the softer light, avoid the glare altogether.

One guideline of hand-held photography is for shutter duration to be shorter than lens length. Your exposure looks fine, but a higher ISO would allow a shorter shutter duration, which could have eliminated camera movement.

Also, A-F does not work well in low light, or low contrast situations.

Exif info:
Camera Model: NIKON D7100
Image Date: 2014-04-04 20:00:24 (no TZ)
Focal Length: 70mm
Aperture: f/2.8
Exposure Time: 0.025 s (1/40-sec)
ISO equiv: 800
Exposure Bias: none
Metering Mode: Center Weight
Exposure: Manual
Exposure Mode: Manual
White Balance: Auto
Flash Fired: No

Thanks for looking at this old thread. I've discovered since then that a change in ISO from 800 to 1600, doesn't increase the noise that much, and I would have been at 1/80. Although, I've been told that with a half-crop camera, one should go with the 35mm focal length for that rule. In this case that would be 1/105 (odd SS) or better.

Yeah, a lesson learned the hard way. I really need to learn how to focus manually without benefit of a split-prism focusing aid. I've been practicing in good light by focusing manually and comparing it to what AF 'says'. Funny, a couple of times, my focus was better than AF.
