I am just wondering how many of you have actually had the shutter replaced by Nikon under this service advisory. I was on of the first to send mine in and the only thing they did with mine was clean it, With all of the discussions I've read it seems almost everybody got a new shutter. Anybody else out there receive 'a cleaning' only?
I did not know about this offer until someone told me a couple weeks ago. I suppose I need to check forums more consistently!
I have thought about sending it in, but I haven't had a good time to be without my full frame, and honestly I don't know whether my sensor gets dirty from the shutter or from lens changes. When I clean the sensor, most of the spots seem to be from dust particles, not oil. I didn't notice any spots when I first got the camera.
I am curious to know how you could tell that it was only a cleaning and not a replacement.

The service order returned with my camera stated - cleaned sensor, if they replace parts they will be listed on the service order.
It hardly seems worth it, if you are just getting a cleaning, and you can do it yourself or get it done locally, even if it is free. Did you follow up and ask them why the shutter wasn't replaced?
Bought mine as a "refurbished" from Nikon. No idea as to whether the shutter assembly was replaced or the sensor merely cleaned. As long as there's no oil problem on the sensor, I wouldn't worry. If you have a recurring problem, take your camera back to the vendor or send it to Nikon and put up a fuss. I'm sure Nikon will fix the problem.
Nikon replaced the shutter mechanism, cleaned and did a general check of my camera and tested it according to their invoice.

I would have done it myself however my D600 was straight out of the box, and there was a glob of something on the shutter, it was big enough to see with the naked eye. It would not blow off with a Giottos Rocket Blower, at that time the Service Advisory was announced so I sent it in. They don't give any explanation as to why they replace or don't replace anything.

Some of the later production units likely got the new shutter mechanism, so there'd be no reason to replace it.

Wouldn't it make sense to tell the customer that? We started installing the new shutter assemblies after serial number 305XXXX --- Oh well.

My D600 was purchased in December 2012, and in June 2012, after about 2000 shots, there were several oil spots on the sensor, so sent it back to Nikon. According to the service order, they just cleaned the sensor and did not replace the shutter. The camera was perfect after the cleaning and I put another 4000+ shots on it with no issues. A few weeks ago, I received the letter from Nikon suggesting that the camera be sent in for shutter replacement. Firstly e-mailed Nikon to ask if the shutter may have been replaced already; they said no. So, after agonizing over whether to send in a perfectly fine camera, I decided to have the shutter replaced and sent it a few days ago. Hopefully this was a good decision as I usually subscribe to the notion "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!" My rational was that if I did not have the shutter replaced, Nikon may end the recall and I'd be stuck paying for it at a later date (assuming it became necessary).
The D600 is a fantastic camera, certainly the best DSLR I've owned. I'm just delighted with the images, especially in low light conditions. 24x36" prints look great, and, since I don't print larger, I've resisted the lure of the D800E - so far! Actually, I prefer the handling of the D600, having shot my friends D800E a few times - not to say I couldn't get used to it. :-) :)
Gobuster - I agree you never know when Nikon may pull the plug on this and like you I don't want to get stuck footing the bill. I really haven't had the time to go and shoot a lot lately so I don't know whether it still has a problem.
They changed the shutter mechanism in mine in February when it was two months out of warranty. I 'fessed up and told them I had wet-cleaned the sensor several times, which could have voided the warranty, but Nikon asked no questions. They're paying for shipping now, so get it done. If you ever decide to sell your D600, I'm sure the buyer will ask whether the work has been done.

They didn't offer any explanation as to why the cleaning and not a replacement. No but it was sent in under the Service Advisory using their procedures and their special shipping labels, under the advisory you don't fill in any paperwork. I'm sure they knew why it was there, generally before you send your camera to them you fill in a web form and state the issue you are having with the camera, this was submitted from the special service advisory webpage so if they didn't know they should have.
