I recently went to a raptor presentation where they had an American Kestrel, a red-tailed hawk, a barn owl, and a screech owl.

I had been taking non-flash pictures out of respect for the presenter, but then I saw that everyone else, from point & shoot to smart phones to the big Canons and Nikons were using flash, so why not me?

I wasn't quite set up as the presenter brought out the screech owl, so I just immediately snapped a picture. I guess the owl knew and winked at me. She has a serious case of red eye, which I find helps make this photo what it is:

Fantastic pic!
Serendipity at its best, I'd say! LOL

How many photags have photos of screech owls all perfectly perched and posed?? TONS.

How many have an awesome shot of a screech owl winking at them! YOU!

TOO cool :)

Dear tilde,
Your second shot, of the Mallard, has lovely texture and color in the water. The bird is almost superfluous -- you could have had a post there, just to show some scale. The water, though, is quite hypnotic.
Michael

Many thanks for the compliment, Michael. :)
I DO happen to have others from that day... and will share them in a separate post.

Ahhhh the Bluebirds of Happiness! :)

Fab captures!
(And you know, it wasn't until this past summer that I've even SEEN a bluebird for real!? They were all over the place in Salisbury this past summer though... hard to miss... but a thrill for me all-the-same lol)

I'm not sure how I feel about the Orton effect just yet (kinda the same way I feel about the HDR trend in photography), but using it on these flamingos lends an ethereal effect that's pretty interesting!

Love how it mutes the colors, too!

Fab contribution as always, photgrl... and many thanks :)

You've captured the holographic/iridescence of the feathers perfectly in this shot!
Kudos!

I will give it a go with this Heron

Yeah.

I'm jealous now! ;)

Great colors in this and I love how the heron is slightly masked by the grasses... not a distraction but adds to the whole feeling of the shot.

Too cool... and thank you!

Just for you. Back in 1977 I bought a gray parrot because it was so beautiful. It would never shut up. I sold it just three months later, but I still love the parrots, parakeets, lorikeets, etc. These are all pictures of my friends' birds.

Thanks!

Now I'm wondering... who won the wrestling match in photo #1!?
I had to do a double take there for a minute!

Number two is a GREAT closeup!
