Nikon US lenses without the US mark on serial number.

A friend of mine bought a referbed 17-55 2.8 from B&H. Mistakenly he ordered a grey market but returned it upon seeing that it didn't come with the US mark on in front of the serial number. The new one came today and it also did not have the US mark in front of the serial number. After calling Nikon, he was told that the number was for a US lens and carried the US warranty. It this something new, or am I incorrect with my belief that US lenses were marked as such?

Most lenses made in Japan do not carry the "US" designation. That's pretty much reserved for the lenses made in Thailand for the most part. What matters is that the lens comes with a NikonUSA Warranty Card that has the lenses matching serial number on it, that's the only true way to tell if its a USA warranted lens or not.

Thanks MT. Didn't know that. I'll get the information to my friend.

When buying a used lens it's best to check the serial number with Nikon, since they do not provide reliable guidance on this. Even the techs in Melville need to check the database. And having the U or the US as part of the serial number is no indication of it's intended market.
