Nikon today announced their new 80-300mm f/3.5-6.3G-ED VR lens, MSRP $899.95

http://www.nikonusa.com/en/Nikon-Products/Product/Camera-Lenses/AF-S-DX-NIKKOR-18-300mm-f%252F3.5-6.3G-ED-VR.html

And my first reaction is, "so what?"

OK, so I just bought my D7100 with two lenses:

AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR
AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR

So now Nikon is offering one lens that does the job of two?

(Edited: Oops, posted in the wrong forum. Is there a way to move this to the "general topics" forum?)

Nikon today announced their new 80-300mm f/3.5-6.3... (show quote)

Nikon has made the 18-300mm zoom for about 3 years now. What was introduced today is a new, much more compact design of that lens, at about $100 less money that the current model. The smaller filter size would make me stay away from it as that will restrict the amount of light coming into the lens and I believe the older model would AF faster. But that's just me. I would also buy the 28-300mm model before getting either of these DX lenses.

   My 28-300 is the most useful 'walk around' lens I have. Sharp, clear, not too heavy or bulky. A little slow, but with most of todays camera you can easily shoot ISO 800 without loosing IQ

Just got word from B&H that it is available for pre-order. Nice range. And it will small for that range. And it is another piezo lens like the 18-270. But like the 18-270, it will probably be lacking in sharpness and detail. If you just want snap shots, but want a little more than a p&s can offer, then it will probably work ok.
