Sometimes Ya Gotta Take What's Given

I took these shots while touring Kawai`i by helicopter. As one might correctly assume, getting a shot while the chopper is turning, bobbing, dipping and otherwise staying aloft, can be a challenge.

No PP done; that's going to be my next exercise. ;-)

So, how best to improve these "grab" shots?

I can't comment on the possibilities of PP but, having done my share of heli and fixed wing shooting, I compliment you on what you've accomplished. Did you shoot through a window or an open door?

I was seated next to the pilot on an FX Star six-seat helicopter. I shot these (and others) right through the window.

Thanks for looking and for the kind words.

Your PP work should concentrate on "removing the haze", or the slight distortion from shooting through the window. This will involve subtle changes in contrast/brightness, "clarity", and some subtle sharpening. What program will you use for PP work ? ..... we can probably narrow it down for you.

Conversely, if you give people permission to edit your photos, they could do so and post them in this thread.

Permission hereby granted. :)

I'm still investigating the PP process and software. I use a Mac, and so I have iPhoto, I recently upgraded my GraphicConverter software to the latest version, and downloaded a demo version of Lightroom 5.4, which I haven't opened, yet.

Ah.. you are in for a treat. Get online and google 'Lightroom 5 Tutorial' and get them imported. (library tab up top right, 'import' click bottom left - navigate to folder where pics are)

You want to use the 'clarity' slider to the right in the top section, and boost the contrast a smidge... and then the 'sharpen' panel is on the right in a more bottom section, and perhaps a touch of vignette to the left, -10 or something.

LR is very intuitive once you play with it a bit.. and the brushes are really outstanding now for tweaking only a section of a photo.

These are quite good and with a wee bit of post processing will become outstanding in my opinion. 8-)

I've forwarded a version of your photo that implemented the changes I had suggested above. If it looks like I cropped out your edges, I straightened the horizon line and that process removes pixels from the edge of the photo for which I apologize. I was a former naval officer stationed in Pearl Harbor (and have visited the Na Pali Coast, but not by helicopter), so the idea of "squared away" has carried over into my editing habitsl

Okay, here it is -- my first shot at using Lightroom 5. I chose this particular shot because I like the way the clouds help frame the shot. I didn't write down the changes I made, as this was just getting to know the program, but I think for future use, it might be a good idea.

Inidentally, I downloaded the image from here, since the original is on another computer. I don't know if that skews the image data any.

Comments?

Here's a rendering using GraphicConverter 9 (Mac).

I think I like the Lightroom version better. LR 5 seems a bit easier to use than GC, too.
