Competeting pp Programs

When I upload form my card reader into the cpu, it seems that PS, LR5, and iPhoto compete to download into their programs first and in the end the file of images download into all three. My preference is to load into LR alone, and then to make use of PS and sometimes iPhoto as needed. The cpu is a new iMac and the pp programs are the latest. I tried closing PS and iPhoto and leave only LR open, but that does not solve the problem. How con I upload into LR alone, as preferred.?

With iPhoto open click on the iPhoto on the toolbar, click on preferences, click on general, and where it says connecting camera opens: scroll through the options and pick the choice you wish to download the files to. In mine when I open that item I get the choice of letting Nikon Transfer2, iPhoto, image capture, No application as choices.

I also use LR, and finally went into preferences to take iPhoto out of the loop. Since I can do almost 95% of PP in LR, and can easily go from LR to PS and back, there is little reason to load it into PS.

Understand that there is no reason to load into PS and LR, but why does it load into PS automatically when my objective is solely LR?

It's a matter of setting your preferences where you want them. Despite the fact that PS and LR have some amount of interfacing capability, they are separate and distinct applications, each capable of performing without the other. Each of them has preference settings that you'll need to visit.

Remember, You are NOT loading files INTO LR or PS. Those programs just look for the images on your hard drive. However, iPhoto does actually load the images into iPhoto - a bad thing, IMO. iPhoto is for amateurs that really do not want to have to think about how files are organized or how other programs might want to access them. Just my opinion.

You can use Bridge to import the images to a place you have organized on your drives, THEN import the images into LR.

Files are never IN Lightroom - Lightroom is just a database that "looks" at your images whoever they are on your drives.

CapitanC, aware of much of what you write.
All images are RAW, and most often 2+,2- and meater for HDR. I leave LR alone opened becasue I am convinced dng best for conversion, plus cataloging and initial pp. I find iPhoto useful for quick and dirty enhancements and email of family pics. So, neither iPhoto nor PS is open when uploading, yet files open into all three for pp, cataloging or whatever. I think use of Preferences is the most likely solution.
