I would get Lightroom 5 which will process your NEF file then when you need cs4 the nefs will be converted to tiff then sent to cs4.

Hi there MTshooter,
As of right now I do not have the D7100 but will do within the next 2 weeks so I am preparing myself in advance re processing the files. I do not want the further expense of upgrading to CS6 if at all possible as Adobe has had their fair share of my money over the years. I would rather spend any extra monies I have on Nik software or the like. What I wanted to ask any other shooters who were in a similar position to me was did they upgrade their PS or find an alternative way around it.

Could someone tell me as to how I would go about converting my files straight from the SDHC card to .dng files. I do have Photoshop`s DNG converter installed so no problem there. It`s just the mechanics of inserting the card into a card reader and then what to do from there on in? I would have no problem working with .dng files even it is another step in the workflow. At my age I have time for that. Thanks.

I have the D7100 and D800. I've been using Lightroom for PP. It handles raw files by default with ease. I only use PS for things that LR can't do

Hi there,
Firstly, thanks for replying.
Without sounding unappreciative I asked my question specifically for D7100 shooters on here using PS CS4 and shooting RAW so as to have a chat with someone as to how they have got around processing the raw files.
Ian

Good morning Ian,
I have a d 7100 & just started shooting raw. I use View NX software to upload my photos to my computer & then use Adobe DNG converter software(it's free) to convert the raw format to dng so PS will recognize them.I use PS CS3 but it will work with CS4 as well.

Mine is the same issue, but different camera. I have the D7000, and I have to go through lightroom, because my CS-5 says it needs an upgrade to read the files, but, there is no upgrade that I have been able to find. Out of frustration I got lightroom, so sold on LR, that I upgraded to 5 and am now a HUGE fan of LR. Once you get it, you'll probably do like most of us, and start using it for about 90% of your PP. The only advice I can give is to learn everything you can about organizing, and make a consistant workflow with that, so you don't have to keep rebuilding new catalogs because you can't remember how you filed things. Don't ask me how I know this. It's just too painful.

A simple catalog system is the best way to go. I have 2 catalogs (1 for business and 1 for personal) I use lots of key words. After a very painful learning curve, I have found this to work the best for me.

Before using Lightroom watch the relevant parts of this tutorial. It's free and being for lightroom 4 is unimportant.

I shoot only raw. color space Prophoto, prossesed in Lightroom5, then to OnOne 8. No need for photoshop unless I need to make a Panorama then I ues CS6. HDR is done with Photomatrix. Sometimes I'll print from CS6, but mainly Lightroom. The same workflow applies when I use my D4

I too recommend you go to Lightroom. Or consider Photoshop Elements 12- it'll let you do some of the latest PS tricks and if you still feel the need for PS4, you are working in Photoshop's file format and can open then in your version also.

Something must be off. I have the exact same setup and I can process RAW no problem. Maybe yours is an earlier version?
