Shot on April 2, 2014 just north of Yakima, Washington. Canon SX50. Distance shots at equiv. 1200 - 2400 mm angle of view. Edits in PSE 12 and Topaz Simplify. Picasa frames.
From wikipedia:
"In the breeding season, there is a laterally flattened "horn" on the upper bill, located about one-third the bill's length behind the tip. This is the only one of the eight species of pelican to have a bill "horn". The horn is shed after the birds have mated and laid their eggs. Outside of the breeding season the bare parts become duller in color, with the naked facial skin yellow and the bill, pouch, and feet an orangy-flesh color."
Neat pictures Linda, you are really getting good with ps. Thanks for sharing. Bee

Beautifully rendered, Linda. I love the white plumage against the dark background and you got both white and dark perfect in #1. Interesting narrative.
Wow, Linda. Some of your best bird shots. Blew me away.

Nicely done. I especially like the first one.
Did you ever find out what's up with those weird growths on their bills?

Great shots Linda, beautifully done, as you know I am a big fan of white birds on black/dark background, so well done, I think perhaps your best
Thank you all so very much for viewing and commenting. It means a great deal to me! I particularly appreciate that you enjoyed the quality of light, exposure and the pp. For me, the best of both worlds is wildlife in an "artsy" composition :)
I continue to be delighted at what can be accomplished with this little camera, even at great distances, and at how much fun it has been learning editing.
