What is Spot exposure? ... I've never heard that phrase before .. Is that a feature on your camera?

Help me Nikonian72, what is 1/ISO??

Shutter-speed is 1/ISO. At ISO 100, your shutter-speed should be 1/100-sec at f/16. BUT, to reduce effects of camera shake, your shutter-speed should also match the length of lens.

So, with a 500-mm lens at ISO 100, shutter-speed should be 1/500-sec at f/32, or at ISO 200, 1/500-sec at f/22, or at ISO 400, 1/500-sec at f/16. All are generally the same amount of light striking CMOS sensor. f/16 will render less aperture diffraction than f/22, which will render less ApDiff than f/32.

Thanks Nik. I knew that formula, you just lost me for a second with the 1/ISO. Shot this last night. Walked out on the deck and shot this hand held. 270mm lens, 250 ISO, 1/250s, f6.3. I'll get more serious tonight if it doesn't cloud over.......

Thanks, this is great info,

I took some hand held with a 70-300mm lens that does not have any IS or VR. I used ISO 400, 1/400, f-9 or 11 in manuel mode.

Sweet shots. Just got in from shooting moon across the lake on tripod---I did what everyone suggested and the moon is overexposed in all the shots!! Better luck hand holding the camera.........

bad luck, someone gave me that formula and it worked for me. Did you have the mirror unlocked or locked? Also try reducing your ISO to 200 and see if that works next time you get a chance.
