Avery Island, La.

Last weekend I took a drive to Avery Island La. It is time for the Great White Herons to build nests. I used my 7D with my new Tamron SP 150-600mm lens. The rookery is a active place. I tried to count the birds on the nesting material, but stopped at 220.

No. Actually I was with a group, called "MeetUp". I arrived a little late in the morning. After touring the gardens, the rookery, and seeing the sights of the grounds, we ran out of time. The Gardens opens at 9, along with the plant, and everything closes at 5. You can drive through the Gardens, but for photographing it is best to walk. This "Meetup" group has photographic events almost every weekend, and sometimes more than one event. Meetup is a national organization, so take a look at their website, "www.meetup.com" and you can find if there is a local chapter in your area. In my area the Meet Up group is over 1000 photographers. We exchange all types of information about photography in classes, and go on all sorts of outings. Give it a try. Oh, if you have other hobbies they may have a meet up for that too.

Bill,
I take it you drove from New Orleans. How long did it take you? Would like to make that trip from Slidell.
Thanks,
Don

Hi Don, From my house to Avery Island, it took about 2.5 hours.
I live off LAPALCO Blvd, near Belle Chase Highway. I went down LAPALCO, to Hwy 90, and followed Hwy 90 to the Avery Island exit. Turn left, and 6 miles to the gate. I'd add an extra hour to the trip from Slidell. The birds are nesting now in the rookery. You wonder how so many of these large birds can fly in all directions, without a control tower.

Bill,
Thanks for your help. Have some out of town guests coming in May and thought this would be a worth while trip.

2.5 hours, nice. The wife and I will be leaving Minnesota Sunday to visit Oak Alley and Evergreen plantations plus Avery Island. 17-20 hours one way depending on the route we take.

I enjoyed your photos. Thanks.

There is another great plantation house along the Mississippi River, called Nottoway Plantation Home. It is located a few miles up River in the town of White Castle, La. It is a fully renovated home, and you can get a B&B in their rooms, or you can stay in the master bedroom in the main house, but you have to be out by 9 am. There are several more along River Road, some are still working. Enjoy your trip, have fun.
