Can you experts tell me if this looks soft? I am too new with all of this. Looking for good honest input.
Focus on the neck might be a little sharper than on the face. It looks pretty good, but I don't think it is tack sharp.

Thanks for your input. Might be of the lens I used. It was a Tamron 70 - 300 on a Canon 7D. Think this might be the case?

I don't know much about the sharpness qualities of different lenses, but if the neck in this photo really is sharper, you might want to try changing to spot focus if your camera isn't set that way. You will probably get some good technical answers from others here who more knowledgeable about these matters. :-P
Do you have the Canon DPP software that came with your 7D? You can load pictures such as this example and zoom 50 / 100 / 200%. The screen capture posted may have lost some resolution, but I could see the hair in the fur at 100%. To be still sharper with your lens, try a smaller aperture such as f/8. I've highlighted the EXIF details and the single focus point. As mentioned by others, the focus should be on the eyes. To get the neck and ear, you'll definitely need more depth of field from a smaller aperture.
I think it is all in good focus. The eye looks clear and crisp to me. The natural coloring of the giraffe is softer on the head. I think that can be misleading.
I also find that with all the photo editing programs sometimes we (me included) over edit or over sharpen. This picture IMHO is spot on as is.

I greatly appreciate your input. I have so much to learn and I do like photography. I had shot this using a Tamron lens and I am not totally pleased with it.
I love close-ups of giraffes, and I think this looks good. (But I'm definitely not an expert...far, far from it!). Anyhow, there someone on this list, Regis, who gets the most beautiful, sharp, clear shots with his Tamron lens. Hope he responds to you!

Sorry it took me so long but thank you for your kind comments
