New to UHH am enjoying all the advise, comments and collective knowledge.
Currently own a Nikon d80,considering upgrading, would like to use current lens. Looking for suggestions and advice on what model one would consider to upgrade to, and does it pay to purchase used equipment.
Thanks in advance. :D

Welcome to UHH. First, you have to establish the maximum budget and provide us with a list of your current lenses. A lot of people swear by refurbished equipment. You will have to satisfy yourself in that event. It is something to consider. Use the search link above for refurbished cameras. It will be very helpful.Good luck.

Welcome aboard. If you already have Nikon lenses, I would stay with Nikon. The D7000 series will operate lenses with and without focus motor in the lens so they are compatible with both types of lenses

Welcome to the Hog, Seagull. Your D80 is the DX sensor. Nikons D7100 is the latest model DX and you can find it new or used. You could also look at the D7000 or the D5100 series used. For used I would look at factory reconditioned only. Check the used departments of B&H, Adorama and others. ;)

I always look for non-new first. I especially like refurbished bodies. They are gone over by the manufacturer and come with all the bits and pieces. Some say that they are better than new because they have been checked individually and adjusted as needed.

I have also done a lot of buying and selling on ebay, buy you have to be cautious. I never bid on a camera until I know how many clicks there are on the shutter. I avoid anything with over 5,000, although that is relatively low.

Since you're considering a new camera, don't aim too low because I'm guessing you'll hold onto it for quite a while, judging by the D80 you have now. A refurbished D7100 would be a good choice.

Another consideration if the D80 is in good condition - have it converted to shoot infrared. I did that with a D70.

Since you have the D80 your best bet if you want to stay DX is the D7100 as it will use the lenses you got with your D80

If the D7100 (about $1k) fits your budget, you may have asked the easiest, most consistently answered question on UHH! :-D

I haven't a lot of experience with used equipment, although my AF-S 400mm 2.8 I bought used from Ebay and have had no problems at all. I would suggest, rather than used, to consider factory refurbs. I have bought several refurbished cameras without problems, including my two D4's http://www.nikonusa.com/en/Nikon-Store/Refurbished-Cameras.page?CID=SEM-Q413-Bing_Nikon_Brandquote=Seagull54
