Previously I've owns a Canon 50D and recently purchased a 70D which I love. Over the years I always wanted a super telephoto lens but could never justify the cost for what I would use it. Then I got the idea of just getting a SX50. I admit it not the same as an explensive lens but it takes amazing good shots fully zoomed out as long as you have enough light. Now I got money left over for other toys.
I was thinking the same thing. But also would like something lighter to carry around all the time. My 70D & 15-85mm combo can get heavy caring it around all day. Also looking at the Panasonic lumix fz200. Less zoom but more bells & whistles. Plus the constant F/2.8 aperture.
True, a faster lens would be nice but it's hard to pass up on the 50x zoom. Plus the SX50 shoots raw which is important to me plus I can use my Canon speedlight on it.
I call it the Hubble on Strap. Nothing like it for my wife, when in the garden taking photos of the bugs, and not having to bend over. This photo she took the other day, its some kind of Cactus. She was about 5' away.

How long can you wait? Rumor has it that Canon is set to announce the replacement of the SX50 HS later this year. It will zoom even farther our, have a better wide angle, and a wider maximum aperture.

That is why I bought the SX50HS. I carry it around all the time and am using my Canon T3i with the Big Sig less and less.

Good name for it. I've posted this before, but here's a moon shot I took with my recently purchased SX50
Panasonic FZ200 shoots raw. Extended optical zoom goes to 46.9 without deterioration. Sony HX300 and HX400 both go 50x plus. 400 is new and about $100 more than 300.

Post some of your SX50 shots, we'd love to see them.
Re: bibsthecat: I began using the Canon SX50 about fifteen years ago and found it to be a remarkable camera. Unfortunately, it has started to malfunction. The lens has stopped moving in an out. By turning the camera off and then on. The lens becomes workable again. I am thinking of purchasing another SX 50. Davidb1879.

Must have been really remarkable as it wasn't released until 10 years ago...just two years before this thread started as has been pointed out. You may be responding to someone who is no longer around as their last post was 7 years ago.
Re: MasonMike: I purchased a Panasonic FZ300 and loved it. But after two years, the lens would no longer zoom in and out. I purchased a second Panasonic FZ 300 and after a short time the lens stopped zooming in and out. A message appeared saying that if the lens stops moving, shut the camera off and then start it again. I tried Panasonic's remedy but the lens still would not move in or out. Panasonic's message tells me that Panasonic was aware of the problem but chose not to fix it. Davidb1879.
