I have some canvas prints where my signature is being requested. What is the best kind of writing instrument to write on canvas with?

Fine point Sharpie should work well.

I heard that Sharpies were not the best. I need a pen that will be smudge-proof and water-proof. What about a gel-pen?

What I would do if I were you is take an unprinted canvas, or a canvas print someone has returned, and experiment with them. I've used fine point sharpies no trouble. The bigger ones tend to be more absorbent -- always a bad thing.

For permanent marks that will not smudge or run, go to your local art shop and buy a fine tip marker named "KRINK".

I would go with either pencil (limited edition prints are signed all the time by artists in pencil, check out a gallery) or really go pro and paint your signature with a fine artist brush and artist paint. IMHO sharpies are for signing sports equipment.
