It has been brought to my attention that this lens is having trouble autofocusing in the A1 servo mode when used on a Canon 7D camera.

I have this lens on backorder for use on that camera, the 7D. I mainly would use this lens for birds in flight, and other wildlife photos. I normally shoot in the A1 servo mode so naturally I am concerned any AF problems.

My question is, has anyone had any issues with this lens? I would appreciate any information. I have spoken with an Adorama tech and he tells me he has heard nothing. When asked how many returns of this lens they had received he referred me to their service department, go figure. I am seriously considering canceling this order right now. Any thoughts?

Jim D

NOTE: I am also hearing of the same issue with the Canon 5D mk III

I have the lens and have used it a lot since I got it I have not had a bit of trouble with it and I love it. I use it for BIF etc with AF. I did have trouble with it focusing one day but it was extremely cold and I think it was more the camera then the lens.

Hi oldtool2,
I also have heard of this problem and am quite concerned, as I shoot a 7D as well. My info came from a reliable source and I am considering withdrawing my pre-order from B&H. Any reliable info concerning this problem would be appreciated...snipe

This issue seams to be limited to the Canon 7D and 5D mkIII cameras only. At least these are the only two I have read about.

What really concerns me is I own two 7D's and am considering getting a 5D mk III. I presently own a 6D which I understand there is no problem with but don't want to be limited to that camera.

That said, if there are problems with other cameras feel free to say so. It may be of interest to others.

Hi Jim, thanks for bringing this to our attention. I use both cameras and have this lens on backorder through Samy's here in S.F. UHH member Regis has posted many shots that have been fantastic. I think he shoots with the 6D though. This is exactly why I like to check out new equipment in person before purchasing. Thank you again.

Chris,

You are welcome but actually we need to thank MT Shooter though. He brought this to my attention in this thread.

He posted these links, shown below, for me to review.

"The issues are widespread, but seem to be primarily with the 7D and 1D bodies, although some have had the same issue with the 5D3 also:

(Note: go to the "Focusing" section on the site above)

Reports of these issues have been popping up all over the place, and Tamrons inventory disappeared off shelves almost as soon as the issue was revealed. Now the Nikon and Sony mount releases have been pushed back. Some Canon mounts have again become available in the last couple weeks, but on a VERY limited basis."

After reviewing these I got on the phone with Adorama but the "expert" I chatted with was very reluctant to tell me anything! When I asked if they had gotten any returns he referred me to their service department. This brought up a BIG RED flag, which brought on this thread!

I also have seen some very good photos posed here but I am unsure what cameras were used.

Hmm. I have both camera bodies & just bought this lens last week. The weather here has been bad so all I've tried are indoor shots and nothing but great focus so far ...BUT nothing moving. I'll try to find something this weekend to give this a try on both bodies. I still have time to return the lens if needed.

Can hardly wait to see your results using this lens with the 7D. I have the T3i also but want it mainly for the 7D. Here is hopping....Rich

Unfortunately I've never tried using Al servo...I'm hoping Jim can meet me & try my lens.
