It was the Zionists who lusted for Palestine as a homeland, starting more than a century ago at least. Zionists got the U.S. into 2 world wars to accomplish their goal.

This letter, written in 1917, became known as the Balfour Declaration:

I have much pleasure in conveying to you on behalf of His Majesty’s government, the following declaration of sympathy with Jewish Zionist aspirations which has been submitted to, and approved, by the Cabinet:

His Majesty’s Government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavours to facilitate the achievement of this object, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country.

I should be grateful if you would bring this declaration to the knowledge of the Zionist Federation.

The letter was not a legal document, but Zionists took it to mean they had been given Palestine as a homeland and started immigrating to Israel.

The Arabs had been promised Palestine as a reward for helping the allies defeat the Turks who fought on Germany's side during WWI.

The British retained occupation of Palestine through a League of Nations mandate. Zionist terrorists conducted many attacks on the British attempting to drive them out of Palestine. The Zionists bombed the British headquarters at the King David Hotel in 1946, killing 91, including 28 British.
Shortly after that a UN mandate gave 53% of Palestine to Jews when they only made up 30% of the population. Wearied of the Zionist terrorists, Britain pulled out. Zionist terrorism in the form of massacres drove 750,000 Palestinians out of Palestine to become refugees who were never allowed to return to their land.
