Today's Photo Outing: How is the Composition?

Today I went to Quarry Park. Quarry Park has 20 old granite quarries. I looped around so that I would end up by the historic area. By then the sun was disappearing behind the trees. I moved around to different spots. Here are 6 of the many pictures I took. They are straight from the camera, no editing. Do these pictures say anything to you? Do they have a focal point, an object of interest? What could I do to improve the composition? Feel free to download and edit any one of them.

They all show the replica of Liberty Derrick, a derrick used when quarrying for granite. Beware, wire haters. There are wires in these photos. I believe the wires need to be there.

In the lower right corner you can see parts of the original derrick.

Mary, I will get back to you on this set. Want to look at some of your others first
Yes, the wires are needed..

Let me ask in the mean time:
Do these pictures say anything to you? What were you hoping they would say? Or What was the scene saying to you as you were standing there?

Do they have a focal point, an object of interest? What was the object of interest you were wanting to be the focal point? How were you trying to bring attention to it?

Gdwsr, thanks for responding.
I took these a year ago. I was using the derrick as a point of interest and I was trying to bring attention to the historic area. But I don't think I succeeded. I do remember that it was getting late and the sun was getting low and things were pretty much in the shade. The derrick always impresses me. The historic area speaks of the past to me.

I looked at all you posts and had a throughly good time :) I would like to follow your photo posts here. What would be very helpful to me for commenting is to mention what you were trying to depict with you photo. In other words, what prompted you to stop and take the shot -- what was the "feel" or mood your were trying to portray to the viewer. Sometimes, of course, we are just practicing a technique but it helps if you mention it.

Your explanation above is very helpful.

A couple of shot that come to mind is you quarry pond and your black background flowers.

You had some good, helpful comments on the quarry shot. I know that that place is special to you but I am having trouble determining what it is about it that you are trying to show me. There is lots of interesting things there but they all seem to be competing with each other for my attention. I assume you are also trying to share the mood you feel when you are there; peaceful maybe?

Flowers are a whole subject in itself. If you don't mind I will PM you on that.

By the way, what post-processing software do you have?

I will have to give some thought to your derrick (your later post of it is better). Since it is nearby, I assume you are going to shoot it again. So if you like we can chat about it more.

In this set of pictures, if I remember correctly, I was just trying to practice a technique, the rule of thirds.

But what I really would like is to get a picture that shows just how impressive that derrick is (to me, at least). And as of yet, I haven't been able to succeed that. Yes, this park is close to me, 2 miles from my house. I spend a lot of time there in the spring, summer, and fall, not much in the winter, though. It is unique because of all the old granite quarries.

Yes, you can PM me on the subject of flowers. I love taking photos of flowers.

I have a mac computer. I have iphoto, Aperture, and Pixelmator but must admit that my photo editing skills are pretty elementary.
