When the snow falls in Chicago, they need to keep the trains running. The switches are heated with gas fired flames to keep them from freezing.
These are not great pictures as they were taken from a moving train, at night, through dark tinted windows. I used ISO 25600 and f 4.0 and the shutter was only 1/100. It was still dark.

In the suburbs, it is done differently. It looks like duct work running under the tracks. So, I assume heated air is blown under the switches. The exposed flames are more interesting, though.
Next winter, (hopefully we are done with the snow for this season) I will have to stand in the doorway. The windows in the door are not heavily tinted as they are in the passenger compartments.
