When I look at these pics, I really like the feeling in the first one.... It does more to convey the ambiance of the location and moment.. The second one is ok from an 'art' standpoint but it seems like just a 'cut-out' from the actual scene and to me it is a little dis-jointed and disturbing. Of course, this is just MY opinion which seems to be against most of the other comments, but we all have our own visions and likes!! With that said, the FIRST one is an awesome view and an excellent way to preserve history!

did not have patience to review all that has already been said so please excuse me if I am redundant.

Mama if you could just tighten up that second shot a wee bit to keep that background out...particularly the yellow crate, I think you would have a real winner their. I played with a crop of it ...wanna see?

Sorry I just found the notification for this today. Was pretty occupied with the Grandkids.) Sure go ahead and post it.

Thank you. I liked them both, though the hubby thought I was a little out there shooting the barn clothes in the basement. :D

Hi Country's Mama....

I read the posts and thought I would also give some insight to what I see. What if you took it another way....see the samples I have attached, if I can load them here.

You have potentially pretty good shots, what you do need to do is look both images and SEE what is the most important and think from that angle....Crop out what isn't NECESSARY.
Loose whatever is distracting as much as your shot will allow, so it matters how you shoot as to what you can do with the image in post production, but you got a lot of good information that will give you good images.

The second shot, I agree that there is TOO much foreground out of focus that takes away from the POINT OF FOCUS.

Now that I have posted them I see that they come out different than I have on my monitor, but anyway here is the idea. The first one I do have more detail in the boots than this shows....well you get the jest....grin

Thank you, yes that crop on the second one does make it much better. I like what you have done on the first one also. It gives it a whole different feel.

You have potentially pretty good shots, what you do need to do is look both images over and SEE what is the most important and think from that angle....Crop out what isn't NECESSARY.
Loose whatever is distracting as much as your shot will allow, it matters how you shoot as to what you can do with the image in post production which you were fine, you got a lot of good information that will give you good images.

The second shot, I agree that there is TOO much foreground out of focus that takes away from the POINT OF FOCUS=point of interest.

Now that I have posted them I see that they come out different not as good as I have on my monitor, but anyway here is the idea. The first one I do have more detail in the boots than this shows you....well you get the jest....grin

I actually liked the first one better because it shows a real-life basement scene, pipes and vents and all.
I like the fact that the whole shot is in focus, too.

THe second one is beautiful compositionally, I think, but like others mentioned, the out-of-focus first jacket detracts a little. What could you do to take the same photo, but get crisp depth of field from the foreground to the back?

I could have shut down the aperture, I could have reduced the zoom. There are a lot of ways to change depth of field.
