I will be traveling for 3 weeks on a vacation and need advise on a new camera bag. I would like one that is fairly light, can hold my sony with a 24 70 lens, a telephoto lense, camera accessories, wallet and personal items, possibly a laptop, and tripod. Having one that converts to a day pack would be great. I have one that is too cumbersom. I would like it to look less like a camera bag for security. I am a woman 5 ft 6. and on the slim side. Headin for to Alaska, waterproof would help.

I have 2 bags. I have one to carry most of my gear while traveling and one I use as a day pack to carry only what I think I need for the day (and it doesn't look like a camera pack). I hope that helps.

Your question will open up tons of advice, as there are tons of different camera bags to choose from, depending on intended use. I suggest you search B&H or Adorama websites and check out their camera bag inventory. Beware, that will occupy more than a few minutes, but you can get a real education on camera bags this way. By the way, there is no such thing as the perfect all-purpose camera bag. I have ten bags and sometimes wish I had just one more. :)

Sounds like a great trip forthcoming. Show us some pics upon returning.

I need a new camera bag and would like some recommwndations. I am looking for a back pack or sling pack, to hold a camera with a telephoto lens, two other lenses a tri pod and personal items, wallet, etc. Maybe a laptop. I would like it to be light, water resistant, and not look too much like a camera case for security reasons. I am about 5'6 and a woman with a leaner frame.

I traded my backpack for a photographers vest.( see avatar) I prefer it,it's hands free. It would hold all the things you mentioned, except the tripod. I haven't found a good way to carry mine yet. Hope this helps. Thx Clipper.

lol. I just remembered a photographer's vest I bought about 30 years ago. I just pulled it out and it fits. Thank you for the reminder.

I too, have been considering a photographer's vest. Is it really waterproof?
What brands would you recommend?

I have used Tamrac Adventure series backpacks for a number of years and found them to be excellent products. They come in a variety of sizes. I have the two largest ones (the 9 and 10) and they have both held up extremely well. In the largest one, I carry 2 pro bodies (one with a 70-200 2.8 attached), 24-70 2.8, 580 speedlite, and numerous accessories - lens hoods, straps, compressed air, batteries, CF cards, cords, etc. As "standard" equipment, there is always a monopod included, but I have replaced it with a tripod when necessary. But the pack can get heavy. I have traveled with these packs and found them to be very convenient, especially for airtravel in today's environment. They are my everyday packs and I basically don't leave home without one. I would suggest you check the Tamrac website and then visit your local good camera store to try on various models and sizes. There are a number of other excellent brands/models out there, but I have liked the Tamrac lineup best for my purposes. Hope this helps.

I bought mine from Banana Republic. I was a building contractor and carried all kinds of junk. It isn't water proof but it has more pockets than one can use. I used to love it and I think I will love it again since I have lost so much weight. It does have a few water proof pockets.

I just bought a Lowepro 302AW sling pack. Love it. I don't care much for regular backpacks. I also have a Domke bag which I use but most of the time I use a Domke vest. It distributes the weight easily and I have a ton of pockets to put stuff in.

I would first evaluate whether I needed to carry that much gear all the time, especially a laptop. I assume some of that is for convenience when flying, etc. when actually shooting less weight and easier access is important. Having said that, I recommend a sling pack to easily access your camera. Some look somewhat like a purse and thus provide some protection.

I recommend the backpack style over the slingback. Have had and used both, but found that the backpack distributes the weight more evenly. Slingback contributed to back pain at the end of the day. The good thing about photo vests is they have so many pockets. The bad thing about photo vests is they have so many pockets----now where did I out the......(fill in the blank space)!
