Unfreezing Water

I have seen many pics of moving water, where slow shutter speeds and tripods, in order to "unfreeze" a waterfall or tidal flow, seem to be the order of the day. Often the results seem to produce a creamy view which do not seem at all natural. The pic herewith was taken with an old (Fuji 1600) P&S at a shutter speed of 1/160 and no tripod. To me the pic does not look frozen, and seems alive and natural. What do other Hogs think?

Well, it certainly looks like a waterfall. The long exposure water picture is an attempt to be artsy and creative. I see room for both types of images.

I've never cared for that 'creamy' look people aspire to achieve. It looks 'okay' in distance shots, but when you are close-up, it looks horribly fake. I want to see those splashes, surface ripples and droplets of water hanging mid-air. My 2 cents.

I agree. Usually, lean towards your type of image.

For some, it's a challenge to see if they can do it. When the weather gets warmer, I'm going to give it a try.

Both have their merits. I have done the "creamy" look, and stopped drops in midair. Depends on the situation.

Very nice, the pond feeding into the waterfall looks like it had a fantastic reflection, was it accessible for a photo?

The bankside in the pic was accessible, but so far as I remember the reflection from there was a shadow. A longer lens from my viewing point might have done it. I took the pic to try different techniques for photographing moving water. But on reflection (haha) I missed one or two good photo opportunities that day.

Did you shoot the picture? I don't think so?

Think what you like. But I will take that as a compliment - I certainly did take it. I can always send you a copy - for a price - but you are all hidden away.
