I plan to purchase this filter for my Sigma 150--500 lens (86mm). Tiffen has one for $69.00 and Hoya has one for $159.00. Of course I would like to purchase the Tiffen because of the lower cost or should I go for the Hoya.

I think the better quality filter helps the image quality. In this case, I do not think you are paying extra for either brand name, so the price difference does give some indication of quality. For this size filter, I would expect a good CPL to cost about $150, so I do not think you are paying double for a very small difference in quality.

I use Hoya and have no complaints but I suggest you visit sites like B&H and Adorama and read the user reviews of the filters. I find that first-hand reviews from the people who have actually bought a particular product are very helpful. That's not to say that there aren't plenty of users here on the Hog, but it never hurts to use multiple sources before you spend your money.

This is a comprehensive review. After reading it, I got the Marumi. Prices are in Polish currency.

Tiffen makes nice filters, but they also make some crappy ,models. Just make sure the Tiffen you are looking at is Multi-Coated before buying it.

You might find that the less costly Tiffen will satisfy your needs. The better filters (more costly) will usually have multicoating to reduce flare, and better quality mounting - the most expensive, B&W, uses Schott glass (Zeiss), and brass mounting, and Heliopan uses similar quality materials and construction. I am wondering in what situations you would need a polarizer on a tele lens.

Here they say you get what you pay for. My first choice is B+W then Hoya.

Personally, I prefer B+W filters.

My perspective is this is typically a one time purchase. Buy the best you can afford. For myself, I own Heliopan and B&W.

You must shop Walmart a lot. Cheap is the way to go.

Tests on CPs say otherwise.
